The tissue on her udder started to die within about 24 hours of her developing mastitis. I was treating her for what I first thought was a very congested udder, 24 hours later I noticed a bruised looking section so tested for mastitis, it was positive and she was started on antibiotics.

<<<What is black mastitis? Just a horrible strain of mastitis?>>>

Yes. I can only speak of what we've experienced in cattle but in each case it was dreadful. The last was a young Jersey, on her third calf. She calved one day and on checking her early the following morning, she was dying. All that could be done was to shoot her and put her out of her misery.

A nasty, nasty thing.

It happened so fast! I couldn't believe how quickly it progressed....So far the super strong antibiotics and the tetanus antitoxin seem to have pulled her through. She lays down quite a bit and is drying up but she's alert and felt good enough yesterday to protest my drenching her with Red Cell and Dyne. If she does pull through I won't breed her again.
