Default CL positive....

I just spoke to a lady with goats and has a doe that is CL positive and is nursing twins. She said that she vaccinated the kids against CL and they will not get it???? True or false?? What are your thoughts on this?????

If the Doe doesn't have an outbreak or have it in the lungs or bladder.. the kids should be OK....
Now if.. the Doe.. has it in her lungs or bladder...the Doe can expose the kids to it... Also...if she has a open leaking abscess ...and the kids where exposed to it....if she vaccinated them to young and the vaccine didn't have time to work... then ...they where exposed to it... anyway Vaccinating kids to young ...does nothing...no protection at all.. or if the vaccine doesn't have time yet... to go through the system and they haven't had the booster vaccine...they may still get it.... It all depends on the circumstances..

The vaccine for CL is a "broad spectrum" vaccine - it MAY or MAY NOT protect them depending on the strain of the virus - much like the flu vaccine - unless she had the vaccine made from the exudos of one of the abcesses.

It doesn't work for everyone, but my experience is this:

Jenny was vaccinated with Case-Bac. Her dam didn't have CL, but a couple other does did. Whether she was exposed to an abscess or not is unknown, but odds are no. She has yet to break out with an abscess, but from what I know, because of the Case-Bac, I cannot blood test her for CL. I can only check her over thoroughly for abscesses and be happy that she has none.

If you want to run the risk, and you think they are worth it, go for it. If they have been vaccinated, there's a fair chance they won't ever get an abscess, but there's always the risk that they will, regardless.

Waddl told me when I inquired about it, that you can still blood test - however, it will most likely show as a low grade positive, but they can not "tell" if it is from a vaccine or from CL - however, with CL, over time, you will see a spike in the values and then an abcess - most of the time resulting from stress.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts. I am thinking that it is not worth the risk.
