Default Mad goat?!?

We had our head of the herd doe miscarry very early in her term so she was separated from the herd. This happened a week after we introduced a new doe to the herd. There was no aggression from the new doe but the head doe did a lot of chasing.

She improved and tonight for the first time we tried to reintroduce her. She ran after the new doe which didn't surprise me and the new doe ran away. She they proceeded to go after a doe that she has been friends and her mates with for almost 2 years! At one point they were headbutting so hard back feet were coming off the ground! I've never had my does play this hard so after they didn't stop I separated and put head doe back in a pen. She was very wild eyed with the whites showing and just looking all sorts of distressed.

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior.

Sounds like the newer one was queen in the herd queen's absence and has decided she wants to keep her position. They will fight it out.

I wouldn't worry about it. Any time we move does from the buck's pen or the kidding pens back in with the others there is fighting to that extent. They have never gone so far as to injure each other, and the most severe thing to have happened was that the new doe was not allowed into the barn by the other does for a few hours, in which case we put a water bucket outside and give them time to sort it out themselves. Being that goats are herd animals, they have to have a hierarchy, and usually whenever there's a fight going on the does on the lower end of the totem pole take the opportunity to try to fight their way up to a higher position. Keep an eye on them for a bit if you want, but in my experience they don't fight to injure, just enough to show dominance. They'll sort it out on their own in a few hours.

She had to re-establish her status in the herd.
