The Chigu goat breed is found spreading all around Himachal Pradesh. There are also thousands of them found in Sikkim.
They are known as providers for high quality meat or what is called as chevon. Its coat is turned into high class pashmina. It is usually seen in white with some mix of grey and red colors. They are medium in size with tiny ears and bent horns directed upwards.
They are raised as free range animals and require limited maintenance only. It grazes on common village lands along with some wild vegetation found by the road side. It gives solo births only once each year. The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources has also considered this goat breed as an endangered species.
