The Old Irish Goat breed is a landrace breed, it was the only breed in the island until the early 20th century when the British breeds were introduced.

The breed fell into a near extinct category from 1950-2000 and were land locked by cities. The remaining wild herd numbers fell to roughly 40 with one dominant nanny. The Old Irish Got Society was formed to protect the breed from further decline. Currently there is a re-domestication effort, in order to create a breeding program to further protect the breed.
