The Oberhasli or Swiss Alpine is a breed of striking color and amiable temperament. They are well known for their gentleness and ease of handling. They originated in the Bernese Oberland of central Switzerland. The name Oberhasli translates to highlander. The original breed was naturally hornless.Obers are a medium sized breed with purebred does ranging from 120 lbs. to 150 lbs. These goats are a rich red bay color with black legs, stomachs, dorsal stripes, and either black face stripes or a solid black face. Often they also have a black stripe from chin to chest and a black ring around the neck. They are sometimes born pure black and these may be registered purebred or american if they are female. If they are male, they must be registered in the experimental herd book.Obers have higher sugar content to their milk and higher butterfat content than other Swiss breeds. The butterfat content is around 4.5 to 5 percent and the milk is sweet and rich, tasting very close to raw cow\'s milk. Some does have been known to give as much as 2 gallons of milk a day. More often they give a gallon to a gallon and a half a day once mature. They do very well in rainy areas as most will graze in the rain and cross creeks without trouble. For this reason, plus the ease of handling, and gentleness with children, wethers of this breed make excellent packing goats.
