Lame

Our Nubian buck has been lame on his hind right leg for a couple weeks now. We thought it was his hooves as he probably hasn’t had them trimmed in his life. We built a milk stand and trimmed them and he’s still limping. I put him in the stand a week later and trimmed them again but that didn’t seem to help. Some days he’s limping just a little and others the limp is bad. Any thoughts?

Any video of the way he walks?

Did you check between his toes for sores?

Is his hooves hot and distorted like laminitis?

Have you checked his leg for swelling, from the hooves all the way up to the shoulder?

Check for mites, any scabs around his ankles and legs?

Swollen knee's or knee?

I was going to ask about the knee or ankle. I've noticed if it rains a lot and is muddy for a few days, one of my girls limps until she gets harder ground to walk on. We always look for a sore spot between the toes. Or a rock that gets lodged in there. Also, how aggressively are you trimming his hooves? When we first got our girls we were very timid because we didn't want to hurt them. After making several posts here, we got more comfortable and it really made a difference. We had 15 limping goats and 2 days after really trimming their hooves, only one was still limping because we had missed a rock that caused a sore. We use Koppertox every month, when we do hoofcare so it has all cleared up.

There are no sores or debris in between his hooves. I think I was pretty aggressive with the hoof trim. I used to be a vet tech so I’m not timid when it comes to trimming nails. I haven’t noticed any swelling of the joints or wounds on his back leg. This started after we treated him for pneumonia with antibiotics. Then everyone gets probiotics in their food every day. I’ll post a video when I can today. I’m currently working so not able to get out there.

How serious was the pneumonia? I had a nubian buck some years back that had a serious infection due to some kind of spider bite. Got him through that but he started favoring his front leg. We didn't notice anything specific. With the help of my vet we tried a few things to help him but he got worse. His joints made alot of noise when moved. Vet said Tank had joint ill. When they have a serious infection sometimes that can go sepsis. It can settle in the kidney and bladder or in the joints. For my guy. It settled in his joints and by the time we figured it out he was very sick and we had to let him go.
I share this because if this is the case here, you need to be aggressive now. Vit c and Dex have shown to heal sepsis in human. He would also need good antibiotics like Baytril.
Any time I see lameness after illness..i jump on it.

wow..that vet way over charged. Dex is fairly inexpensive.
He may not be sepsis..but if he were mine, after my experience I would start antibiotics again. Hows his temp been? Appetite? Since you have Liquamycin , then use it 1 cc per 20 pounds once a day for 10 days. I would also give lots of vit c. If you can get Dex. I would give 1 cc per 20 pounds once a day for 3 days then ween him down. So ex: if he gets 6 cc..go to 5 cc the next day. Then 4, then 3 and so forth until no more.
Probiotics 3-4 hours after antibiotics.
B complex as a support.
My buck did not have high fever but did have slight elevation in temp.
My buck seemed to recover..enough so he bred a few does..i think we stopped treatment too soon and he relapsed..that is when we let him go.

Temp is normal. And appetite is good and normal.
