Hey all!!! It’s been a while since I’ve been on here due only to the crazy life of moving. Anyway my oldest doe is not doing so well these days....
Her coat is super shiny, she gets free choice alfalfa, grain of 16% protein, flakes corn, BOSS, and beet pulp shreds. Free choice loose minerals, trace mineral block, iodine salt block, and received 4grams of copper in June.
She was wormed back in June with ivermectin
I just did a fecal on her and she was at 300 epg so under the limit of needing to worm.
Her famacha is a 1 I’ve had two separate blood tests done one each week. She is clearly anemic.
I have been giving her red cell twice a day and fortified b12 complex. I’m not sure what to try next. The vet said her teeth were fine. Thanks in advance for any tips, tricks, or advice. We are going to anoth hospital where the vet is a caprine and small ruminant specialist
I would send a fecal into a lab and have a closer look. Sometimes a second set of eyes help. Include liverfluke, lung worm and coccidia in that fecal. Meadowmistlabs are good and are quick. Only $5 a sample right now. (Will be $6 starting next month)
In the mean time..red cell should be once a day for a week then once a week 6 cc per 100 pounds. If this is not getting results..then switch to injectable pig iron..4 cc per 100 pounds sub q. Have epinephrine in a syringe ready to give or a large dose of liquid Benadryl ( 20-30 cc) and more handy if needed. Some goats react to injectable iron so its best to be on guard.
B12 injectable once a day is helpful to rebuild red blood cells
30 cc 50/50 acv /water once a day to speed recovery
High protien feed and browse alson help rebuild red blood cells.
I would definitely have a fecal done by someone else as well to compare. But keep in mind that sometimes even what is considered a "normal" load is too much for some goats. Elderly with problems and/or sick goats are going to be less likely to handle much of a parasite load.
Thanks everyone, I will get the fecal sent out ASAP. As far lice/mites I’m not noticing any signs and we’ve definitely had our share when the weather changed out here.
I definitely think a fecal analysis ASAP with a FAMACHA that poor.
Are her poops normal? How is her energy level?
If you can't get the fecal analysis out the door in the next couple days, I would consider deworming her using a combination of dewormers. Which dewormers do you have on hand?
As much browse or leafy branches you can get in front of her, the better.

I agree with what has been said, definitely get another fecal done. Sometimes liverflukes don't show, after you get results I'd still consider treating her for flukes anyway.
How much feed is she taking down? Dyne is a good way to get more calories in her, but if she is eating well on her own I'd wait before giving it (it has slowed down eating on some of my ladies).

Or valbazen which also addresses liverfluke. Ivomec plus and Valbazen are the only two dewormers to address LF.
There are herbs and ess. Oils that can assist in addressing then as well.
Update, her second fecal came back low enough wormer is not needed. Johnes teat also negative. We started her on steroids, iron and calcium supplements daily. She is back to her old self and gaining weight. Not sure what is going on but I also got a sulfur block she seems to really use.
Sorry I missed the earlier flag....I'm Glad to hear she's doing better. With seniors if the weather is getting colder she just might need more calories to help her regulate her body temp. (Think about a grandma who always has the heat turned up and wears a sweater when everyone else is roasting.) just a thought....
