Anyone have experience with an ear infection in goats? Our 2 year old, 100 pound boer cross doe was laying in a house today when I went to feed. She is wobbly and keeps shaking her head hard. Otherwise is perfectly fine, we got her into a sick pen. She can walk on her own just a little wobbly. She can see fine, she’s eating like a pig, she’s drinking.
We have given a high dose of b12 in case it’s poilo. And a dose of pen-g. Her ears don’t look gross inside but ear infection is the only thing we could think of. Her eyelids are a bright pink to a light red.
Did you keep giving the thiamine and penicillin? Sounds more like polio/listeriosis but a vet or very knowledgeable person who can physically look at the goat would be best.
Yes were still giving the very high doses of b12 abs penicillin. We've had goats for over ten years and we don't really have a good goat vet around here so not an option
The vet said high enough doses of b12 complex works for polio. I should've said it was the complex and not just b12. We are giving the penicillin every 6 hours. She's starting to get very upset that we're keeping her from the herd
B complex has thiamine in it. Vet is wrong on this one. B1 (thiamine) is what is needed with polio. B complex usually has 100mg of thiamine in it. She would need 5 cc every six hours to get 500 mg thiamine.
Glad she is improving for you
B complex is what we're giving her. She's been getting close to 10cc of it 3 times a day. We're continuing the treatment for 5 days but she acts perfectly fine now. Upset that we won't let her go with the herd
So glad she is doing better. With polio..its best to ween off meds after she is 24 hours symptom free. To ween Just drop one shot a day..so go to 2 shots..and after 24 hours if she still is well.go to one shot. Then drop that last shot when you feel she is perfectly fine. Or after the next 24 hours.
Good job with her..your quick action helped her recover so much faster.

We've been weaning her off. She got her last day of penicillin today ( completed a five day course ) and she went down to just one b complex shot todsy. And tomorrow we're gonna watch her closely but let her out with the herd. She is getting stressed being locked away even with a friend. Would you give her a b complex shot every other day for a little or just watch her? We're planning to give probios after the antibiotics
Thought everyone could use some happiness in there day. This is the doe, Lexie. Fully recovered and with the herd happily. She was bouncing like a baby earlier today.
she really needs a bath and is getting her winter coat so she looks a little ratty.
Actually she does have lice yes. We just took our really old gal to the vet for what we thought were lice but to confirm. And mainly to esblish with a new goat bet and we have confirmed lice. Everyone is being treated and everything cleaned and dusted
