This morning I went outside to feed the goats and found our doe Lucy standing alone in her shed. I tried to feed her but she wouldn't eat.
Sheep Terrestrial animal Snout Livestock Grass

She refused to come out and see the other goats. I checked her FAMACHA but I'm not sure if I did it right..
Should I deworm? She's not pregnant although the dewormer I have is safe for pregnant does.
Eyelash Ear Whiskers Felidae Snout

We did breed her but either she reabsorbed the babies early on or was never pregnant because we've seen her go into heat twice.

Thank you all in advance! I have Red Cell, B Complex and Probios along with other things. Should I use any of them for her? Thank you!

EDIT: We did this about 5 minutes after I wrote the post:

We gave her 5 cc of B Complex injectable. Given IM.
We also tried to give her red cell via drencher which she was not interested in. We probably only got one cc (give or take) down her throat. She did eat a little grain.

EDIT: About 2 1/2 hours after this post was made we took her temp and it was 104.4.

EDIT: About an hour after we took her temp we injected her with 5 CC of Penicillin. We did it SubQ and rubbed around the spot we gave the injection so it wouldn't sting.

I'm not sure. I know she hasn't gotten outside to graze/forage in a day or so. She does get orchard grass hay every day of course. They don't have free choice baking soda, should I offer it to her? Thank you.

Whats her temp as well. Don't deworm her just yet...let's assess first. Temp...famancha..poop..eyes bright and alert? Is left side tummy hard and tight? Do you hear rumen working?

I didn't get her temp but I'll check it!

I saw her poop and pee and it seemed normal to me. It wasn't pointed or odd shaped or runny/diarrhea looking.

What exactly would the rumen sound like? Thunderstorm?

I'll go check and see if her stomach feels hard or squishy.

thank you!

Sorry this picture is at a super odd angle. Hope it works..

Her FAMACHA looks fine.
When looking from behind ..rumen is on left babies would be on the right (if bred)
I'd give her some flat dark beer. It won't hurt no matter what. She looks hunched up...what's her temp? (in numbers) That's really important.
I really doubt she's bred as her heat cycles seemed very obvious but I'm not ruling out anything yet..:hide:

I'll get temp. How much dark flat beer? And are there are substitutes for it - we don't have beer but I guess we could pick some up.
Thank you!

#13 ·
I'd give her 6oz to start this morning then 6oz in the evening. Make sure the DARK BEER is room temp and most of the bubbles are gone.
Sorry there aren't substitutes, it needs to be dark flat beer.
Ok thank you. What brand?

The rumen gurgles and rumbles. Listen for burps and gasses.. Its easier to hear rumen with stethoscope. If you feel her left side you may catch it moving.

I second the Dark beer and probiotics which work together to really jump start a sluggish rumen. We dont drink here either but our goats do lol. I keep a six pack put away just for them.

Thank you! We don't drink either. What brand? This may sound dumb but what does the beer help with? Thank you!
For probiotics, should I just give the dosage in the package? Thank you!

You can use Guinness beer or any dark beer. I’m like y’all. I don’t drink either but keep a six pack in my pantry for my goats. If I don’t use it, it goes out on top of my trash bin With a bow as a tip for the garbage men At Christmas, then I buy a new one. Beer really is only good for a year, and I hate wasting it. They appreciate it anyway.

Thank you! I'll try to find the closest store that carries it!

I haven’t felt her ligaments but I do want to note that she is acting very much like she does when in labor. We don’t own a buck but did borrow one.

Her earliest possible due date could’ve been the day we got the buck which would make her due date 2/11/2021 but if that’s the case it would’ve been a fence breeding since we didn’t put her in there. The buck was a short Nigerian dwarf so I doubt he could’ve managed a fence breeding with her.

If a doe loses her baby or babies but doesn’t expel them, can she still go into heat? Just wondering if she is expelling them now or soon. I don’t see discharge though.

We keep Guinness brand. You are wanting dark..so darker the better..
Beer contains digestive yeast, b-12 B6 and B1 chelated to the yeast. Combine this with probiotics and you have a power team for the gut.

#19 ·
Thank you! We actually have yeast meant for horses too if you think we should give her that.

We found a closer brewery. Are any of these three considered dark flat beer? Thank you!

I agree with goofy goat. You don't want to over do and upset her tummy.
Guinness extra stout is good. Open and leave on the counter to flatten out some and come to room temp. I dont worry about it being real flat

Great, thank you! My parents are about to go out and will pick up some Guinness Extra Stout for her.

We really need her temp to help us know what might be going on. 101.5 -103.5 is normal range

@GoofyGoat and @happybleats

Just took Temp and it was high at 104.4

We have injectable penicillin and some Duramycin we could give as an antibiotic. Which do you think is best?
Thank you both so much!

#28 ·
Temp is a tad high...I would go with duramycin 1 cc per 20 pounds sub q once a day. Lift a good tent and hold that tent and jiggle about after injection to help move the medication and decrease the sting. Do the beer and probiotics 2-3 hours after antibiotics.

Hope she feels better soon!!

#30 ·
We injected her with 5 CC Penicillin. We did it SubQ. We rubbed it in too for her so it wouldn’t sting.

#31 ·
Ok thank you!
This may be dumb, but what is the beer for? What does it help with? Thank you!

We’ve had goats for almost 8 years but to my knowledge this is the first time we’ve had a sick doe - so I’m pretty rusty regarding medications. :hide:

How much should I give of the oral probiotic paste ? (Probios)
Just the amount on the package? Thank you!

I checked her udder and there was no milk. Ligaments were hard so she’s not in labor! lol

Her left side felt hard whereas her right side was squishy.

Rumen sounded like raindrops on a roof. Is that good? :hide:
I didn’t use a stethoscope though so maybe it would’ve sounded different if I had.

#33 ·
Ok..since you started the penicillin..stick with that for 5 to 7 days. 1 cc per 20 pounds is dose and yes always sub q. Be sure to pull back plunger before injection..no blood is good to go..see blood..re adjust and try again.

#36 ·
Thank you both! I’ll continue with the penicillin!

Is it possible her fever is contagious? Should I start my other girls on antibiotics just in case? I think they are all pregnant and one is due in a week or so.

I’ll try to keep an eye on Lucy (sick doe) and everybody else’s temps to see if anything changes.

And again, thank you both so much! I really appreciate it!!!

#37 ·
No..dont start the others on antibiotics unless they present their own symptoms. Just keep an eye on everyone. ;)

#38 ·
We took Lucy’s temperature again this morning and thankfully it was 101.2! We gave her another shot of Penicillin (5 CC, given SubQ) and she did eat a little this morning. :)
