Hello! What do you feed your goats while they are on the milking stand? I have been feeding BOSS and TSC grain. The goat I am milking, Fergie, gets distracted very easily and she starts kicking her legs, so I can't milk. I am looking for something she would be more interested in to feed her while she is getting milked. Thank you
I feed a dairy goat pellet from our local guys (Poulin) and BOSS. My goats and I don't love the brands of goat feed they sell at TSC. But it may be that if you've got a kicker, you can do things to work on getting her settled better on the stand. Sometimes having an assistant brush them while you milk can help them be zen. In bad cases you may need to use hobbles to stop her from kicking.
If the issue is that she is eating and getting done too fast, if you put some smooth rocks in her bowl, she'll have to pick around them and she will slow down.
Ok, great! I have tried hobbles and she just doesn't stand still. She is a second freshener, last year she did well on the milking stand. This year she just isn't having it. I was thinking maybe if i changed up her food a bit she would be more interested in eating instead of kicking. I will try alfalfa pellets and see if she likes those. She kicks some and then stands for a minute, then goes back to kicking. Thank you for the help!
