Poe has UC again

Poe has been straining to pee for about 12-16 hours Now. I have given him ACV and AC. There’s not even a drip so I think it’s a total blockage this time. He doesn’t get any grain so I’m thinking it’s because of his Pygmy size. None of my other goats get this problem and they r even wethered. Poe is intact. I went to go check on him this morning and he has prolapsed. Anything else I can do? Surgery with a vet is out of the question unfortunately.

Oh my. If he's this blocked to the point of prolapse, it's not a good outlook for home remedies. BUT, have you snipped the pizzle yet? Try that, and if you can't get any relief for him that way I'm going to suggest humanely putting him down as soon as possible. If there are stones clogging the length of the urethra it won't be possible for drenches to reach them, and it has already been a long time. Once his bladder bursts he'll look better for a while, but the urine in his blood will kill him. I completely understand that a vet is out of the question. This is not a cheap surgery and there's no guarantee of success. Nevertheless, you can't just let him die either. I'm sorry you're going through this and I hope a pizzle operation can offer relief. That would at least buy him some time for other treatments to work.

I have snipped his pizzle. I didn’t think it was looking good when that didn’t give him any relief. Is there a way I can keep him comfortable enough until my husband gets home from work in 5 hours? Poe has always been my favorite little Guy and I just can’t bear the thought of putting him down myself

Ugh...I'm sorry. Banamine is the only pain relief for him but may not be enough. UC I'd such a dreadful Condition. 5 hours is a long time to wait. Just depends on how bad he gets. ((Hugs))

Yes it has been a rough one for you. Hang in there.

I'm so sorry you (and Poe!) are going through this! Dribbling urine is a good sign! If you can drench ammonium chloride in as small an amount of liquid as possible, it might be able to soften and break up the stones. As long as he's dribbling, it will be able to work its way along his whole urinary tract. The dribbling will also keep excess pressure off his bladder. Once the bladder ruptures there's nothing anyone can do.

I doubt it's needed.
You gave him banamine, right? That might have helped relieve enough pain and swelling that he's stopped straining, allowing the prolapse to go back in.
Hopefully with the swelling relieved, you'll be able to acidify the urine enough to dissolve the stones. I agree that trying to gently work the stones out could be helpful-but there's also a risk that you'll end up with one potentially getting stuck. I'd probably wait and know it could be necessary to try if he becomes fully obstructed again.

Even though surgery might not be an option, can you get a vet out to make sure the whole pizzle got snipped off? Also, a vet can catheterize him to relieve bladder pressure, keeping him from straining. They might also be able to instill AC directly into the bladder to dissolve any lingering stones or crystals. (In humans, it was a common treatment to do vinegar instillations into the bladder for post-polio & spinal-cord injury patients who couldn't fully empty their bladder, making them prone to bladder stones. That was before they taught people to self-cath, but it's still done occasionally. So who knows- maybe there's a goat version of the treatment :ponder:)

This is fantastic news!! Keep up the ammonium chloride treatments for a while. You want to make sure any more stones he might have are dissolved. Then make sure he gets some regularly. Review his diet and and see if there's anything that could be causing stones to form. I'm so happy for this outcome! It is very rare for UC to resolve from home remedies when a goat is as blocked up as yours was for as long as he was. I'm so happy for you and Poe!!

I don't think you can put enough ammonium chloride in the water to keep Poe safe. In fact, you really shouldn't add it to the water at all. It's very bitter even in small amounts so it can discourage them from drinking enough water, which will in turn contribute to bladder stones. You're better off disguising it in feed or treats, or drenching it with a syringe and a lot of Gatorade or Jell-o powder to sweeten it.
