Hi Everyone! I have a month-old goat that I am currently bottle-feeding in the house. I rescued her from someone who could not properly care for her. She is eating well and very healthy and we plan to move her outside shortly (when the weather clears up). I want to get another goat so that she can have a companion and their own little herd outside. I plan to get another doe to avoid any breeding in the future. My question is, what age goat should I get? I've read where an older goat could help her learn the "ropes" but also they can be kind of a bully BUT a younger goat could make her feel not as "secure". Any suggestions or input is greatly appreciated!
@Tanya got a companion for her bottle baby (and that one's name was Gizmo also). Maybe she can share her experience.
From my own experience with goats I would also suggest same age is best.
@cdtaylor91 welcome. My Gizmo is 3 month younger than my Destiny. Gizmo tought Destiny how to goat. Gizmo is a wether so there are no hormonal behaviour or breeding. They love each other like buddies.
My wether and doe are placid and beautiful and communicate so well with each other.
Puttingvyour doe outside on her own will drive you insane.
A buddy the same age would be your safest bet. Otherwise, you might ask around and see if someone had an older doe who has a lot of maternal instinct. My doe, Josie, 'adopted' my other doe's kid. She taught him the ropes, what to eat and what not to, is really great with him. A doe like that would really be a great fit for you...but you'd have to find the right one that wouldn't be mean!
Aw. A lil lady.... enjoy her. But you will need to get her a friend. She will become destructive on her own.
