2023 Chicken Chat

8378 Views 596 Replies 25 Participants Last post by  Jessica84
I thought I'd start a new chicken chat since the old one is so long. I had a broody chicken that I couldn't seem to break. So I found some hatching eggs close. I couldn't leave her where she was so I put the eggs in the area where I wanted her and moved her. So now I have 12 eggs in an incubator and broke her broodiness. Of course tonight I go out and find I have a new broody chicken. At least I know now how to break the broodiness.

My silly chickens are walking around naked again. I don’t know why some are molting this time of year!
I’m really trying to hold off on getting chicks till later in the year 😅

I went to bottle feed and I have a broody hen too! You think they would wait a month huh.
So what kind of eggs did you get?

Mind you I do not like chickens lol their my stepmoms but I take care of them! Their just too messy for me! Other then that their ok I guess ! I was sooo worried about Cornflake though (she was named that because she goes nuts for cornflakes) this year because she had lost so many feathers before winter! Well she is fine grew them all back now! I don't know if it was her or the rooster plucking them out! anyways I always seem to have one sitting on nests! They don't seem to care what the temp is! Had baby chicks in November their pretty much full grown now! And they still did it all winter, no heat lamps!

We've never crossed those colors of those breeds, but we have crossed Buff Orpingtons and Gold laced Wyandottes. We got one chick from that crossing. She's really cute. A more golden Orpington with a few little speckles on her tail feathers. I bet lavender and silver laced would be a beautiful cross.

How do you like your bresse… I’ve been thinking about it. I want a non CC meat bird that can lay it’s replacements

I had a goose go broody a month ago… way too early and eggs weren’t fertile unfortunately. Weird year.

Those all are really good breeds and should be good crosses!
A few years ago I got a surprise box from cackle. There was a lavender Orpington that I ended up with. She was absolutely beautiful but not as friendly as people made them out to be. Or maybe there was just that some of the other breeds were more friendly. With that box I learned I love cochins. They are the sweetest things I have ever seen just not the sharpest. So when I get a nice coop to keep them in 24/7 I’ll be getting more cochins.
Well on my Turkey side of things I lost blue my blue slate Tom. I ended up with 2 toms from this last batch of poults but I don’t have much hope for poults this year. The hens do not seem to be impressed with either one and beat them up. They will also run in front of Savanna and lay down and the toms do nothing. Maybe they will get their act together but if not it’s honestly ok if I go a year without any poults. If any hens go broody I can always put some chicken eggs under them to hatch out.

I'm really hoping my turkeys will hatch poults. I lost one hen so I have 1 tom and 3 hens. One of the hens is laying eggs. I set up 2 5x5 pens to put the hens in for hatching poults. Now I'm not sure that will work out. But I will use them for chicks and poults anyway. I'm going to get a bigger incubator to hatch poults in case my turkey hens won't.

You can do both! Once they start sitting to hatch they usually won’t lay any more, sometimes if they get started early you might get 2 batches but I’ve only ever gotten 1. But I usually collect the eggs, leaving a few to keep them laying there and will get a good amount to incubate. With my incubator I can only put eggs in once a week, and if the hen happens to start going broody you can put a few eggs that haven’t made it to the incubator back.
I think the 5X5 stalls will work though. My goat stalls are 4X6 and I have kept some hens in those once they hatched.

So I want to get another incubator. I have a 12 egg incubator but want to get a larger one to hatch turkeys. I've seen ones that hold 24 and 41. What is a good one to get?

I got chicks today! Been wanting to try Whiting True Blues for a while...they are always sold out. A few pullets came available, so I snapped them up! I bought a couple roosters, too (I'm calling them my heir and a spare ;) ). I am going to try breeding and selling hatching eggs. The hatching egg/chicken market is crazy here right now!
Supposed to get down to 22° tonight, so I may need to add another heat lamp to keep them warm enough. This is why I don't care for starting chicks in early spring. But oh well! 🤷‍♀️ I was just thrilled to finally be able to try some True Blues!

Look for a nature right 360. It holds Turkey eggs and can turn them. That’s what I got before the cabinet incubator. And they really are not badly priced either! I don’t remember how many they hold, I want to say 18.
