Another Update: Soft or Runny stool

638 Views 21 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Moers kiko boars
I swear this little guy just likes to stress me. 6 week old wether eating and bouncing around but has had soft poop for a few days and is runny off and on. It's not watery, stinky, and tan like before. Checked his eyelids and it looks like between a 3-4. Should I worm? And what do you suggest I use?

Take a fecal to your vet. At this age I suspect coccidia. If you absolutely cannot test I would go ahead and treat for cocci. I do prevention starting at 3-4 weeks and monthly until 6-8 months old.

What do you prefer to treat for coccidia with? I have corid but I recall that it can cause vitamin deficiencies?

Corid is what I always use. Do the 5 day treatment. Then on the 6th day give the red cell or rooster booster, a vit b and thiamine is what they need. Its in both of those.
Called the vet and am taking a sample in before I pick my son up at noon.

If it's not cocidia I'm thinking it would be good to start preventative treatment anyway? What do you guys do for a preventative regimen? And until what age?
If you use corid, don’t use fortified vit b complex or thiamine while giving corid.

I do cocci prevention with corid every 21 days for for 5 days.
The fecal sample will tell you what is you are dealing with. That will help you. K?
Cocidia. So they gave me a 10 day regimen of Albon. Lucky for me this guy will suckle on anything so dosing was pretty easy.

After the 10 days is there and supportive care I should be doing? Probios or anything? Thanks for the help.

I like to give probiotics about 3 hours post each dose. Offer plenty of hay and browse. Consider adding some electrolytes if he’s runny.

Thank you. Will do as you suggested. This little guy is keeping me on my toes. But I'm learning a lot.

9 days of Albon and still pooping logs so I took another fecal sample to the vet. They will give me Marquis if he's still showing cocidia. I'm wondering if I should ask for a second dose to give as a preventative in 3 more weeks. Thoughts?
It won't hurt to have the marquis on hand anyway.

Okay so the vet who said he was going to give me Marquee the next time his only event that fills in at this clinic every once in awhile The other vets at the clinic have no idea about goats. So they told me to do a 5-day dose of corid because they know nothing about the marquee and the other vet is on vacation. I have corid on hand and I'm following the dosage recommendations from the medicine cabinet thread.

No scours since the day I started corid then last night there was a puddle on their tabletop platform. Yesterday was day 4:5

I was feeling confident that the Corid was taking care of the problem but now I'm worried it's not. What do I do if he still has scouts after his last dose today? Do I give him a few days before I have another fecal run or do I do it right away? I'm wishing the vet had just giving me the Marquis even though it's $$$. I'm worried this guy will have lasting damage or won't make it through the longer this drags out.

Get him on probiotics daily to restore his gut flora..have a fecal done in 10 days. I would also give tummy tamer (recipe to follow) with added Clove to support hus gut and address parasites and coccidia naturally. Let his system work through all the chemical treatments. I would send the fresh fecal to a lab like meadowmistlabs.com to confirm. It's only $7 and you will get a good parasite profile for him.

Tummy Tamer
1 teaspoon each
Cayenne pepper
Ginger
Slippery elm
Cinnamon
Clove
Acv
Molasses
20-30 cc water..blend smooth with a fresh raw garlic clove.
Since he is a little guy. Split this into two doses...drench. I would do 4 times a day (2 baches split) but at least 2x (one dose split)

I find this makes a huge difference. If you don't have Slippery elm..you can grab capsules st any pharmacy for human. Use and open them up in a pinch.
You can order loose slippery elm powder mountain rose herbs

Finish the 5 days of Corrid. Then do the above. It takes a full 5 days of this.

Finish corid.
If you dosed correctly and gave proper amount, it should cure any cocci.

I would also give pig scour halt, double dosage on label, give for 3 days, 2 x a day.
Then rebuild the rumen.

Should I go ahead and do the tummy tamer for the doe as well? I am giving her Corid as well since they live together.

Thank you again for all of your help. This guy is determined to teach me everything I need to know about goats all by himself.

You can wait until corid is finished first. Day 6 give it.
