Any idea what this could be?

772 Views 8 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Goatastic43
My goat has bare spots on her nose, eyes and base of ears and a small patch on her neck.
I have gotten them a mineral block and I have been giving zinc tablets. I also treated her with ivermectin. All my goats have lice and I have tried several treatments and nothing is working.. any ideas what's going on here?

Looks like mites... pour ons don’t really work on mites from what I’m told. You’ll need injectable ivermectin. Also, I haven’t tried it, but nustock is suppose to work really well too. It’s a sulfur cream and I’d avoid putting it around his eyes but you could put it in any other bald areas

I agree. Injectable ivomectin dose is 1 cc per 40 # sub q once a week for 3 weeks.

Yep, I agree.
Also, you said you got them a mineral block? Their tongues aren’t rough enough to get the amount of minerals they need. They need loose mineral out 24/7. Sweetlix Meat Maker Minerals are one of the best. If you can’t get those, I’ve heard Purina Wind, Rain, and Storm are also really good. @Goatastic43 uses some really good loose minerals as well but I can’t remember exactly what she uses.

All great advice.
In addition to the above advice, copper could be an issue here too. Does the coat look rough and brownish or reddish? If so copper is in order.

Yep, treat her for mites (https://tennesseemeatgoats.com/articles2/mites.html) and make sure they have free choice loose minerals, not a block. :) We use Purina goat mineral and Purina Wind and Rain Storm (a cow mineral that is also good for goats). Not having adequate minerals makes them more susceptible to lice and mites.

Did you inject the ivermectin or give it orally?

What other treatments have you tried?
Yep, I agree.

Supreme Goat Mineral, though it’s only available in and around Tennessee at Co-ops
