Any ideas on mix?

914 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Kiki
We took in a male and female goat that are both 5 weeks old, and Boer mixed with something. Didn’t get a ton of info on the mix.

The legs look Boer, but the ears don’t, and male is just 17.5lbs, female is 24.5lbs at 5 weeks. So he’s on the small side, maybe her too for predominantly Boer. Pic is of male (brown and white) with female hiding face (black and white). Female is naturally polled and the male has buds.

Any guess on what they are crossed with?

They look like Boer/Nigerian mix. The female looks older than 5 weeks. They sure are cute!

Or they could be Boer/Pygmy. @Kiki, maybe tomorrow when there’s more people online you’ll get more input.

Yes, I kind of wonder if she’s older too. The woman said they were December 15th babies, but then said November and when I asked her again she said December. So who knows. She was also referring the female as male. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It sounds like she was a bit scatterbrained.

They're very cute! I would think they are mixed with Nigerian. I'm not sure if any other breeds are naturally polled or not.

I agree, I don’t see any indication of boer. Their color, airplane ears, and being polled tells me that they’re likely a dairy/nigerian cross. If there’s any boer, it’s probably 20% or less.

They’re adorable either way!

I see Pygmy but Nigerian isn’t out of the question either. I don’t don’t see Boer though.

Nigerian are more likely to be polled than pygmies.
Also the colors, especially the male.
If they are that young (or at least one of them is) what are they eating? Or are they bottle babies?

So it turns out the woman that sold them was lying about their age, I believe in order for the buyer to think they still had a chance to get big. They are two months old, and tiny, so definitely Nigerian mixed with something. They aren’t bottle babies and had been weaned at 8 weeks we believe.

Yes, 100%. They are older than we thought and are tiny. So for sure Nigerian mixed with whatever. The woman that sold them trying to say they were older than they were so folks would think they would grow bigger. She was selling the little guy for meat. We got them not for meat, so that didn’t even matter to us.
