Baby goat

Hi! So we aren’t new to the goat game, but one of our mamas has had quintuplets. Everything was fine until today, when we noticed one of the kids weren’t doing so well. The mom kidded around 10 days ago or a little less. One of these baby goats is acting quite lethargic and it’s mouth is hanging open occasionally. It doesn’t seem like it can walk, and it is still able to move its ears and tail. Please help! Any advice would be appreciated! Thankyou!

Hi and welcome to TGS
Congratulations on your quints.
What is the babies temperature taken rectally? Normal is 101.5-103.5*F
Have you been weighing each baby daily to make sure they’re gaining weight? I’d be worried this little one isn’t getting enough to eat.
Hows it’s breathing, is it raspy or labored?
Did you dip babies cords in iodine?
Did you give baby a pea sized dollop of selenium vitamin e gel at birth?

The kid may be dying from starvation. Have you been weighing the kids daily with a scale that weighs in pounds and ounces or pounds and tenths of pounds?

I believe the mother had rejected it over night and it hasn’t been getting enough food considering she is dealing with the three other babies

Thankyou for responding, it sort of has a labored breathing like it is working manually. It’s eyes are also struggling to keep open. But still his movement

Did she have quints (5) or quads(4)
Either way with that many you need to weigh them daily. I’d pull the little one and start bottle feeding it.
whole cows milk from the grocery store heated to 101*F with a pinch of baking soda in the first bottle of the day and probiotics in the last.
We can help you figure out how much to feed once you have its weight.

Thankyou so much for replying, we had fed it a mix of milk, with some also buttermilk mix heated. It had a little trouble taking it

This chart will help you. Don’t use the buttermilk, just whole cows milk. Buttermilk will be too rich for baby.

Do you know if he got colostrum? My doe had 4 two weeks ago and the littlest one (typical here) struggled latching on so I use a cheap dropper, spoon, or my hands to be sure they get a couple teaspoons right away. Mine are ND so the runts can be teeny. Then, when we visit them for the first couple of days we make sure we see the little one nurse. This has worked for us. We weighed all of ours at 5 days and they each gained about 35-40% of their bodyweight.

Did you get a temp in the little baby with the issue?
Baby is starving. Baby will not eat if its temp is below 101.3. I would start with just plain cows milk. Also milk should be at least 100.

It seemed to be doing better, we checked it’s temperature last night and was in the ranges y’all specified. But I believe we had found him too late. Sadly it has past. It is heartbreaking when these things happen. Thank y’all so much for the information and support. We will definitely apply it if it happens in the future again. And we know where to come. 😢❤
