Baby only nursing from one side

452 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
On Valentine's Day, our ND Roo just had her first baby, and he only feeds off one side. Roo's other utter gets very hard and enlarged. I have been forcing her to let me milk it 1 time a day. Should I milk her 2x or, should I tape her other tete and milk as needed and force Cupid to the opposite or and just keep milking her I don't want Roo to get the mastitis. I have heard so awful stories about that. Nor do I want Cupid not to have enough. Please help... Carol

You can either tape the teat or continue to milk out. Even with taping the teat, you will still want to do some milking out.

Good luck with that. We had the same problem with one. We ended up milking her out on that side and if we caught the kid eating we'd put our hand over that side and he would go to the other but he never went over there on his own. Never! - even when he got bigger.

I've heard of taping - we didn't try.
I always have success with teaching a kid the other side.
Every time you see the kid nursing, remove the kid and put it on the ignored side.
I have taped the teat always nursed for the day. The kid gets hungry enough and will find the other side. It works.
