Um, while baking a cake today found I had no regular baking soda! Was tempted to just use the livestock bicarbonate soda. I did borrow some from a neighbor but has anyone used the livestock kind in a pinch?
I mean, what if there was a blizzard here or something or no neighbor was home?

Now, why would you be baking a cake in a blizzard? :slapfloor: I think they are both the same ingredient though...

What could be better then eating warm cake with a pot of coffee sitting in front of a fire watching the blizzard outside?

Oh you guys. LOL! It was a manner of speaking to get a point across.
    No blizards here.
See what I figgered was livestock stuff might not be actual human grade but BS is BS & since its baked

i think that the livestock soda wouldnt be as safe to eat, the regular stuff is probably cleaner.

I have a box of "baking soda" and it says "bicarbonate of Soda" on it Then in the active ingredients list it says "Sodium Barcarbonate" purpose - antacid. Uses- relieves heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, upset stomach due to these symptoms.

Ya, tis the same thing. I do use it & vinegar to clean out my coffee pot. I guess its one of those things "approved" for livestock but not for human consumption.

I would use it too and have

Another thing I have used is the liquid molasses from the feed mill in baking. Hey, it's clean, I take my own container and pay 12 cents per pound and it works just as well....just needs a tad bit of sugar added to it. To get a quart of molasses from the grocery store costs like $2.50.

We use the livestock stuff and have no problems with it :)
