Hi, we have a week old pygmy/nigerian. he is meant to be a herd mate for our month old nubian milk doe. When should we band/castrate him? When will he be fertile, and do normal sized bands work for minis? He's got some tiny little gonads lol! but then again he is only 4.5 pounds himself!

Rowdy can be fertile as young as 8 weeks old...I don't band my boys til they are around 7 weeks. By that time, their little raisins are grape sized and I'm sure to get both in the "little green band"....allowing a few weeks time for the urinary tract to grow helps to ensure a lesser chance of contracting urinary calculi...stones.

I also give kids their first CD/T shot at 4 weeks of age, the booster at 7 weeks to get the tetanus antibody in their system before I band.

We band everything here from 7 to 12 weeks. 7 being the soonest. ;)

Thanks so much for the info! I thought it would be later, but I didn't want him trying to breed my doeling. So the normal sized bands work? I didn't know if they had different sizes?

Those "normal" green donuts are all I've ever used, they work well.
