Barn Sanitation

926 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
I am currently splitting our large run-in shed/barn into 2 sections to prepare to buy 2 boer goats for my daughter to show. The barn has a lot of horse manure and urine. We will clean it out to the dirt floor but I know bacteria etc will remain there for some time. We plan to bed on pine shaving. I'm looking for ways to sanitize the dirt floor for the goats 1/2 of the barn. I considered using lime but I'm not sure if this will be safe for young goats. Any ideas are appreciated.

Welcome to the goat spot!
I’d scrape the floor as clean and deep as you can, then put a layer of barn lime down followed by a thick layer of shavings and it should be fine. you could even put straw over the shavings if it’s cold to help keep it warm for them
The biggest problem is that ammonia smells fro m urine can cause respiratory problems in goats.

That’s what I would do too!

Great. Thank you for the fast reply. We had boer goats for many years but have taken a 5 yr break, until now. I'm sure I'll have more questions along the way.
