We had a conference on milk goats supported by our MPO (milk producers organisation) on a Saanen milk goat farm (Belnori Cheesery) in Bapsfontein, which is between Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa. Here are some pictures and videos from the conference: Some speakers informing us. Putting a tattoo into a goats ear. Painfull, but quick for the goat. Green tattoo mark. 50 liter cheese vat. the milking stable milking machines preparing to milk Saanen goats. getting her milked. After milking Saanen kids. That was done for local farmers (the farm workers on the video are however not local, the farmer there got his staff from Malawi), industry information and some education. No full courses tough, just initial exposure. The tattooing was for practical demonstration. I got some more videos, I just didn't film the tattooing of the goats ears. Should do that next time!
Thank you for sharing. I always enjoy seeing glimpses of how things are done in different places around the world.
I actually have put in an offer on a 25 ha property with two houses, big store rooms (with attached flatlet), milking stables, workers quarters, orchard, boreholes, pump, paddocks, etc. It's bushveld or to be more precise bankenveld type of vegetation. I just have to sort out the financing. Of the info and contacts I made at the dairy conference will help me with the business plan. I'd stay in the flatlet, rent out the houses, while I'm growing the herd and get the cheesemaking business running. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U0yr7mfofA[/ame]
