I'm just getting started with boer goats and was wondering what the best choice of hay is in the Midwest (Ohio).

Would it be worth replanting if we've got plenty of Timothy Grass now?

Thanks

There is no "best" grass for goats, nor is grass their first choice in hay or pasture. They are browsers and they like variety. They will go for weeds, poison ivy, kudzu, mf roses, etc., before they will go for grass. You might check out this link and see what you think, though. You might also check out www.sheepandgoat.com. They were using chicory in their pastures for their goat tests and, from all accounts, having good success with it. Since you have a good stand of Timothy, you might ask your extension office if you can just seed in some alfalfa or clover to up the protein content.

Timothy is fine. You could add in some orchard grass and clover for a nice mix. But I wouldn't replant. Some alfalfa would be nice too.
