Boer vs Savanna

823 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Robert F
I want to add Savanna breed to my Boer and Boerx herd.
Should I purchase Savanna buck for my Boer crosses or better off
getting Savanna does and cross them with Boer buck?
Really wish to upgrade herd quality for commercial market.
Ty ahead for your time and interest.

Why not get a couple does and a buck.

In my experience, fullblood savannas don’t perform nearly as well as the savanna crosses. The crosses are my absolute favorite.

Therefore, I would personally put a savanna buck over boer does in order to get a higher number of savanna crosses. My fullblood savanna does never outperformed my fullblood boer does, so I don’t see the benefit.

Ty all for your responses!! Much appreciated.
Yes, I will get buck for my does as I had thought as well and
look to purchase savanna x does to keep for my commercial herd.
PS In my budding experience, I noticed does with the most milk
prove to produce bigger stronger kids; thus my decision to look for
meat/dairy cross nannies for commercial purpose.

I think having a savanna X dairy cross would be wise! Since savannas are essentially white boers, you should have higher ADGs on nursing kids if you incorporated a dairy breed like nubian.

Sounds like your program will be heading in the right direction!
