Bottle Fed Boer Twins - Scours, Milk Replacer, Whole Milk?

835 Views 6 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
We have two boer twins that were born on March 30, 2021. Their mom fed them for about a week, until her health started declining. We started supplementing with Shepherd's Choice Goat Kid Milk Replacer while they were each around 7lbs, giving 6oz 3x per day. Mom started doing worse, so we upped them to 10oz 3x per day. It's not working well, as they have scours and look far skinnier than I'd like. They are bouncing around, have great energy. Mom passed away this morning, so I'm looking at making some changes. I've researched enough to see that we should offer electrolytes in place of milk for a few days until the scours clean up. Any advice on how much to give? I believe we may have been overfeeding with 10oz 3x per day, so I'm thinking less on the electrolytes. Thinking we should also switch to whole milk after the scours clear up - but there are SO MANY differing opinions on how much to give and how often. Some base it on weight, some are a flat amount every x amount of hours. I want to do the right thing and am lost on how to help them thrive.

First..sorry for the loss of mom.
We feed based on weight and we feed whole cows milk when goats milk is not available. There are many opinions on how much to feed it can be frightening. Over feeding is for worse than underfeeding a little. A friend used to day "lean but alive" while we don't want them lean..we want them growing well..we definitely don't want them over fed. So here is a formula we start with
Weigh baby..multiply that by 16 to get weight in oz. Multiply weight in oz by 10-12% tonsee how much per day to start with..Divide into 3-4 feedings. After each bottle..feel tummy. You want a flat but firm belly..not too poochy and not sunken in. Adjust amount accordingly. Reweigh baby every few days and adjust amount. Add pinch of baking soda to first bottle of the day. I would also give daily probiotics.
Each baby is different...so even sibling may need a different amount even if they weigh the same. Treat each kid by its own need.
Also some like to add heavy cream and stuff to cows milk. I don't find it necessary and often can be too rich for baby.

Best wishes

For electrolytes, should I only give that and stop milk replacer until scours is cleared up?

then go straight to whole milk once cleared up? Using the new formula for how much to give?

the male is 10lb5oz and female is 9lb5oz. So I’ll do 6.5oz 3x per day for him and 6oz 3x per day for her.

Give the kids the same amount of ounces of electrolyte water they should be receiving if they were being given milk.

Also, make sure to warm the milk in a pan of water. Have you taken the temperature of the babies? Make sure their temperature is between 101.5-103.5
