Breeding age??

799 Views 7 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  GoofyGoat
I have a Nigerian dwarf doeling that I would like to breed next year 2022 , she will be 9 months in January and she currently 38 pounds. I was planning on getting her bred in January but I asked my vet and she said I should wait till she’s two years old, is that really necessary? I thought 9 months or 45 pounds was big enough? I’m not sure what to do because I was planning on may kids. But I also don’t want to breed her if she’s not big enough.
Please help!!!

It's really a personal decision on when to breed as long as they meet the minimum requirements- for NDs it's around 8 months and 40lbs.

As long as your doeling has nice and wide thurls, hips, and pins, and is in great healthy, I would be totally fine breeding her.

I personally will breed my girls when they are at least 8 months old, 40-45lbs, have good width, and are in good health. I know some people like to wait until they are older, but I don't.

I recommend you checking out Blue Cactus Dairy Goats on YouTube. She has done several videos on explaining if a doeling has met the requirements to be bred or not.

Hope this helps!

Like said, it's a personal choice. We don't breed our girls until 18 to 24 months. I like them to grow a bit in size and maturity.

Personally I would wait until she was at least a year to a year and a half old. If you really wanna be safe. Plus some does need to mature mentally to be ready to be moms.

Its up to you! she'll be perfectly fine if you breed her at this age, as long as she is in good health. In the past I've always bred them when they're under a year old...i just like to line it up so that they dont kid before their first birthday... this year i'm holding one doeling back and wont breed her till next fall cuz #1, i wanna see if it has any different effects on her, like if she grows better etc not being bred till she was older, and #2 i want to show her as a yearling at the fair.

I'd also recommend checking Blue Cactus Dairy Goats. She makes a lot of good videos.

Thanks everyone, I’m probably going to wait till June to breed her because she’ll be a year and half old but maybe if she grows a lot before January I’ll breed her then. I’m just going to wait and see thanks everyone

I personally won’t breed any of my nigies before 18 months, usually they’re closer to two. This way they’re more mature physically and I’ve found they have less complications and are better moms.
