All of our bucks tested negative for the CAE/CL/Johne's/Brucellosis test panel, but one buck we swore up and down would test positive. He looks like a walking clinical case example. Large swollen knees, fused joints (zero flexibility in the knees), "dancing" on his front legs etc. However, he tested negative, and it's highly unlikely the clinic made a mistake. It may be a false negative, but I doubt I can convince anyone to retest, so my question is, aside from the obvious banamine he needs to be on, what else causes these kind of joint issues? He's about 6 years old and a myotonic. Good weight, excellent muscling, but horrible front legs.

If you want him retested, I would insist on it. You are paying for it why not?

If at all possible go to another good lab for testing. Then it is like a second opinion.

If it isn't CAE, it might be caused by injury, normal wear and tear of old age (osteoarthritis) or Chlamydial arthritis.

I'm not paying for it, the company is. I *might* be able to convince them to retest on my own dime, but it's a long shot. Would 6 years of pasture put that much wear and tear on him? We have his son here too, and aside from an infected joint (below the pastern) on his front foot, his front end is much better and no wear and tear, despite being only a year younger. Maybe the myotonia has something to do with it? Both him and his son tested at a 5, so they're not too extreme on the scale.

I always heard the CL tests weren't very accurate, are CAE tests the same? We did have a positive, but it was a teaser doe, and she's never been in contact with any of the bucks. Their samples were sent separately as well, though all the results came back on the same note.
