Can One Goat Have Mites and Not the Other?

868 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
My buck Phantom has come down with some sort of major hair loss. His hair is thinning on the backs of his back legs and on his sides and stomach. But, his brother Cullen looks fantastic. His coat looks better than it's looked in a long time. They are both housed in the same pasture and sleep right next to each other so is it unlikely that what Phantom is dealing with to be mites?

I am fully aware of how tough it is to figure out skin and coat problems. I'll probably start with zinc for Phantom and go from there. I'm suspicious it's not that though, because I've seen that before and this doesn't quite look like that. I'm thinking I'll do NuStock too.

Yes. One goat can have mites or lice. One goat can have a worm load. Goats or any other livestock are individual animals.

Okay, thanks. I just wanted to know if it was unlikely considering the proximity to each other. I thought I had heard that mites are highly contagious.

I have some injectable ivermectin. I guess I might as well give him that.

I wonder why it is always bucks that get this?

I hope he improves quickly for you.

Is Phantom itchy, scratching himself, rubbing against surfaces to scratch an itch he can't reach?

I haven't noticed any more scratching than usual. But it's possible that I just haven't noticed it.

i had one doe get mites and i didnt know i thought she was losing fur reaching over the top of a hay feeder (because apparently getting the hay right in front is not good enough LOL)
only the one out of 4 goats at the time had the mites. I treated all of them with permethrin and then sprinkled seven dust in the stalls. one treatment and all gone, the fur is growing back now.

I agree, if one is deficient or not as healthy, parasites can cause issue with them, while the others who are healthy do fight them off better.
