So shearing in Australia was a couple of months ago and the individual fleece tests are back from the lab. I have all the animals in the flock fleece tested every year, it costs about $3 a test but I think its well worth it.

SO the averages are pretty good:

Kid does 13.78 um, 59.3% yield and 239 grams of down
2yo does 15.60 um, 52.6% yield and 383 grams of down
Older does 15.95 um, 49.9% yield and 287 grams of down

49 x Kid bucks 13.70 um, 56.4% yield and 258 grams of down
4 x 2yo bucks 15.16 um, 57.3% yield and 590 grams of down
7 x Older bucks 15.66 um, 60.82% yield and 529 grams of down

Of course there are some individuals that are much better than this, but the average is probably more meaningful than the outstanding ones. That is until we can bring the average up to that level!

Where do you send your cashmere off to be tested? Do you send in the whole fleece?

I see your kid fleece is 13.73 um. Do you mind if I ask what UM is? Here in the US and other places it is Microns.

I like the numbers! This year we used a buck from WA that has a 12.9 micron fleece. We are very excited that we added him to our herd. Not only for the completely new bloodline, but he is white white, and how can you pass up a fleece like that. Good luck this year!

Another year, another round of fleece tests back!

Kid does 14.14 um, 47.8% yield and 160 grams of down
2yo does 14.70 um, 44.9% yield and 276 grams of down
Older does 15.12 um, 42.1% yield and 200 grams of down

Kid does are a smidge coarser than last year, but 2yo and older does are finer. That's pleasing because I was working on making sure the adult averages are well below 15.5 um.
