CL / Abscesses in our Goats! Please help!

1411 Views 17 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
Hi, we have 9 goats currently. All are mixes of Nigerian pygmy and Nigerian dwarf. We noticed 2 of our bucks had these large tennis ball sized abscesses. Buck1 had it under his right ear and Buck2 had it on his chest. We recently noticed a lump forming on one of our does. I'm not sure where it is, but I was told there was a lump. I will check tomorrow.

We bought 2 does and a buckling from some seller on Kijiji, no other information provided other than "Nigerian Goats". They bred and now we have:
2 Does
4 Doelings
2 Bucks
1 Buckling

Anyways, Buck2 was culled and the abscess was disposed.

Buck1 still has the lump and it's getting bigger every day. Is there a proper way to "treat" CL in goats? All are living together. Does this mean all our goats have CL? Do we need to euthanize or new kids? There are 2 nursing from the doe who recently develloped an abscess...does this mean the doelings have CL now?

We are planning on castrating all our bucks in case it the abscesses spread even more.

If I drain the abscesses with disposable scalpels, will this work? Like if I drain the abscess will it "remove" CL? Or do we need to cull all of our goats? The doelings and bucklings are super sweet and everything...

Also, can CL be spreaded through the doe nursing her doelings?

What should I do?

Edit: Oh I forgot to add, we bought them in March of 2020. But the doe who has the lumps right now had smaller abscesses around 1-1.5 inch diameter.

Do a search on this forum for CL. There are a couple very good threads that can answer your questions. You would want to isolate any goat that has an abscess. Have the pus tested when it bursts or you lance it. Lance it on a tarp, wear gloves, collect a pus sample and flush out abscess. Throw away the tarp. Once the abscess is healed, the goat can go back to the herd. But more than likely CL is already in your dirt. Whether you choose to manage CL or remove all goats from the property and "clean up" your dirt and buildings is up to you.

Oh boy. I'm sorry you're dealing with possible CL. There are a few thoughts on how to handle CL in the herd. Cull everyone with CL cyst or work to clean the herd. Which is hard work, takes time but doing able. Once you decide what you want to do..we can give you instructions. Big question is.. did anyone burst on the property?
Every goat with a CL cyst needs to be separate from the others. Set up a pen far from others that can serve as your CL pen and won't be used for clean goats for a long time.

Thank you for your replies! I spoke to a person at a farmers market and they told me what to do. Thank you so much for all the information!

I was told to use a disposable scalpel and to drain the abscess. Make sure not to drain on wood, and since there are many flies atm, use a dish soap, hydrogen peroxide and iodine mix to clean it. Then make sure the goat is separated.

The abscess needs to come to a head first. The hair will start to fall out of the knot as it ripens. The pus is what you want to collect in some type of container, maybe a ziplock baggie, and have it tested. You don't want the pus to even touch the ground, so an old piece of tarp or something similar laid on the ground away from any area the goats have been, or will be, in is the best. Wear gloves, use paper towels and anything that is touched by the pus needs to be gathered up and burned afterwards.

Yep! Forgot to add that. We are getting disposable syringes and collecting the pus in it, and sending it to a vet to have it tested. Then burning the stuff we used or something.

Good to have it tested to know for sure.

Under the ear sounds like it.

The abscess on the chest?
Has he had a CD&T vaccine shot there?
I know some breeders give shots in that location.

No, he has never been vaccinated. It's hard to find goat vaccines/dewormers here. We are calling a vet soon to get dewormers.

Oh my gosh I am in disbelief, I posted the complete cure for CL.. and can't understand why people who have CL in the herd can't seem to find my post on this CL 😖 I have all rescued goats, nobody gives me any information on the goats I bring home, that is how we got CL in my herd, please look at my cure.. I had no clue treating CL with draxxin would completely CURE ..I had searched the internet for years.. never would I put formaldehyde in a cyst.. but I found a small study done on 12 goats treated the cyst with draxxin..I had nothing to lose, I injected the draxxin into the cyst directly not into their bodies..I thought it would just give me more control over the cyst popping around my other goats but come to realize that each goat I injected draxxin into the cyst... hasn't formed anymore..3 years of no cyst! All summer I'd be draining cyst, little did I realize that they wouldn't form more! All I wanted was to help other goats to stop being culled.
It's very easy to just inject the cyst every week and some just DISSAPEARED and never came back.. you need a prescription for the draxxin from your vet, it's $245 for a small bottle but I didn't even use the entire bottle. It was well WORTH THE MONEY to not have to constantly deal with cyst.
Please inject draxxin into the middle of the cyst.. if any goats form any more 😖😣🐐

Just wondering why nobody told this person about draxxin??? It would have saved her goats, is there a reason nobody told her that I posted on CL cure? It's now 4 years since we had a cyst, mellow would get one after another she hasn't had one since the draxxin was injected 😣🐐🐐⚠

Emily, did you read how I cured my goats of CL??? I need to ask the other people why didn't anyone point her to the draxxin? Did I post all this for no reason? I am trying to help people with CL instead of culling. Is it that nobody believes that I cured my goats.. even my own vet treats CL with draxxin now, she's a fabulous goat vet and saw for herself that draxxin cured my goats 😣🐐🤦all I wanted was to save goats from being culled 🤦⚠🐐

The cyst on Phoenix completely DISSAPEARED.. sorry I didn't do that in capital letters.. my phone does that.. I think people believe that CL will go internally if draxxin is used but never had the internal CL 😫💔

I have to agree. ;)

Posting a link to your Draxxin CL cure thread is easier, so you can direct them to it for further discussion. :)
