DE food grade advise please

193 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
Hi there lovely people, I was advised to get food grade DE, I groom goats daily, and don’t see any fleas or ticks etc, but my wether does seem to like a good old scratch, he often is rubbing up fences. His winter coat nearly all gone.
Can I feed some amount of DE or should I just dust him down?
Also can spot on for dogs be ok, or what would you advise, just done fecal test, all clear. Not had to worm my two goats yet.
Many thanks love from UK

Honestly I am not a fan of DE. Its very drying for the skin and can cause Respiratory issues. No5 much proof it works. Feeding it is usless and if it gets wet topical or ground treatment it also voids effectiveness.
If you are not seeing lice, just scratchy, check his skin to see if hes dried out..maybe needs some helathy fat in his diet. I like using coconut oil with flax seed and wheat germ mixed in. A tablespoon of that a few times a day for a week or so seems to help. Or a drizzle of a quality Ex virgin olive oil. Other causes can be zinc or copper deficiency....
If at closer examination you do find lice..Cylence works well. If you prefer natural treatment, feeding fresh raw garlic helps and petting him with a quality te tree ess oil diluted with carrier oil.

Best wishes

Arh thank you so much for a quick reply, and very helpful info, I’ve just dusted with DE, but will give a brush out mown I don’t see any infestation on him, and I would have thought my doe would have bugs if he has,she does not itch, so I will try what you suggested in the form of extra virgin olive oil, many thanks greatly appreciated xxx Donna. DE works very slow and it can easily get into the lungs if not careful.
I don’t care for it either.
