I've been raising goats for 5 years. Thankfully I've never had one with diarrhea until now. I purchased a new 8 week old doeling today. When we got her home we gave her probios and her second CDT shot. Following that she had the runs while I was holding her. I was going to keep her separated from the rest of my goats for a week anyhow. She is now quarantined in her own newly cleaned and disinfected stall. I am not only concerned about her but my other goats as well. I have a set of 6 week old twins in my barn that have become my grandchildren's pets so obviously they are also a concern. Can someone please tell me what to watch for and how to treat this if it continues? Thanks.

Personally I don't worry much about loose stool after transport because it can very likely just be stress related. It would still be a wise idea to get fecal test done as that's always a smart thing to do with a new animal or when there is a concern. But aside from having tests done just keep an eye on her and give her plenty of hay

Prior owner gave her one dose of safeguard.
safeguard wont kill much of anything anymore, because people have used it wrong. Glad you are getting a fecal so you can get the appropriate dewormer if needed

Yikes! Don't purchase from that breeder again. That type of poor parasite management is what results in unthrifty and poor growing goats for life! i hope the veterinarian gets her back on track quickly.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Fecal showed a bad case of coccidia. Started on corrid this morning and she is already showing improvement. Tonight she has a clean backside and started eating a bit of grain. Corrid for 5 consecutive days. Good thing I caught it early and had her to the vet the very next morning. The breeder had no idea she had coccidia in her herd. She has a bunch of young kids in her barn. I texted her this morning to let her know and suggested to her that Safeguard is pretty much worthless. Hopefully little Glory makes a full recovery and thrives. I've never had a parasite problem before this. Don't want to ever have it again. Thanks for your assistance.

Coccidia lives in the environment. Most adult animals are pretty much immune to it, unless something radical happens to cause extreme stress. Almost all young kids have coccidia, its when they have too many cocci critters, that is when the damage occurs to the intestines. Good job catching it and starting treatment. (I can't believe a breeder didn't know this- actually I can...)

Thanks. Today was her 2nd dose of corrid. She acts like she never had an issue. Is drinking, eating grain and hay, and is acting like a perfectly normal kid. She is friendly and playful. Hopefully we caught it soon enough so there are no long term effects. I appreciate the responses from everyone!
