I literally just found out 3 days ago that according to ADGA “Starting January 1st, 2023 all bucks born on or after this date will be required to have DNA marker testing in order to register offspring.”
What if a buck were to have doelings before he was DNA’ed? Would he still have to be typed before those does were registered? Also I want to make sure I don’t need to DNA my buck, born 2018, unless I want to.

I need answers to the same questions!
I already filed and paid for the DNA typing on 3 of my bucks but the ADGA hasn't sent me the forms I need to finish the process... If bucks born before this year have to be DNA Typed the ADGA is going to loose a lot of people.

Following! I thought this was for next year! 🙈
Say I have a buckling born this spring that I want to register (unlikely, just trying to understand how this all works). Would his sire need to have DNA on file? Or could I just DNA type the buckling?

Although this is a hassle, I'm honestly glad ADGA is doing this because it should greatly cut down on the number of bucklings who are sold registered and intact when they really should be wethered.

So … I just got done typing my bucks born last year. They will not mail you a form , instead it will go to your email electronically. The way i understand things, they want to have dna on bucks in order to register all kids. Jim Vanderline is handling DNA through ADGA, so he might be able to answer your questions. Because I only have two breeding bucks, I got it done. Any bucks born here this year will have to be DNA typed in order for their kids to be registered… but I sell very few bucklings as herdsires. I’m leaving it up to the buyer to test.
You do not have to type your does, but many people are starting to do this as well.

They sent me 1 of the 3 forms for my bucks and haven't responded to my ticket asking where the other 2 are and it's been weeks... I know it's kidding season so everyone is sending in applications but it still drives me crazy.

They also charged me full price on each of the bucks instead of the discounted price for all 3 but I'm fine with that as long as they actually send me the form to get this over with! 1 of the 3 already has kids on the ground and the other 2 will soon (I know I was the one who procrastinated for so long)
And they cut off the phone lines so we have to wait weeks for someone to respond to our tickets.

This is what bothers me the most. It’d be different if they shut off the phones and to focus on tickets and were answering those within a few days. But I’ve had tickets in for months with no response. I sometimes wonder what the heck I’m paying for but feel sort of stuck with them.

They pushed it back. The requirement no longer goes into effect this year.
Any buck born before January 1st, 2024 is exempt. You can register any of his kids without testing him even if his kids are born after that date. So this does not affect any bucks you already own.
Any buck born after that date (and I expect they'll push it back again since NG still isn't functional) will have to have his DNA on file before kids can be registered from him. This just involves paying ADGA a fee, waiting for them to email paperwork, and then printing that paperwork and mailing it to UC Davis along with a sample of the goat's hair. His doe kids will not need to be DNA tested but any of his buck kids will in order to register their progeny. The buck's DNA does not need to be on file at the time of his kids' births, but it will need to be before those kids can be registered.

But again, they pushed the requirement back. Any bucks who will need mandatory DNA have not been born yet- they haven't even been conceived yet. You all have time and the bucks you already have are fine 😉

They pushed it back to January 1st, 2024. :) The rule is that only bucks BORN on or after January 1st, 2024 will need to be DNA'd. You do not need to DNA bucks born earlier than that, so your 2018 buck doesn't need to be done, unless you want to! 🙂

This is my first year raising registered stock so I was a little upset about having to pay more money my first year lol
I literally had no clue until I saw this thread. This will be my first year as well wasn’t planning on selling intact bucklings this year but now idk if I ever will.

Well I read down to this now. That puts my mind a little at ease but still. Now I’m honestly wondering if I even want to raise registered goats if next year I’m gonna have to go through all that trouble and extra fees.

It is a hassle with the extra fees, but I think it may not be such a bad thing....it may make people think twice about registering subpar bucks just because they can. I have DNA on file for all 5 of my bucks (and pulled hair on the two I am leasing to keep in my files "just in case) for peace of mind and for my buyers' piece of mind. I have seen so many herds impacted lately by incorrect pedigrees, a lot of breeders are testing their bucks anyway and I think that's a great practice.

That’s actually why I’m testing my two anyway. And I don’t think it’s a bad thing either. In theory, I think it’s a wonderful thing but I worry it’ll just be another hassle and disaster like most everything I’ve done has been so far with them. Everyone says I joined at a bad time and I’m hoping that’s the case. Buts it’s been the case for the year and a half that I’ve been a member. I’ve just been very frustrated with ADGA overall. I have registrations stuck in seemingly perpetual limbo. I’ve done support tickets to no avail and don’t even have the option of calling. It’s frustrating. I know they’re trying to right the ship but meanwhile I am new to all this and marooned on an island of inefficiency and stagnation with little to no assistance or even communication from them. I am finding it harder and harder to have patience and any faith in the organization. There must be some part of me that holds optimism though, because I’m still doing it and still trudging through blindly hoping I’m getting it right and hoping things will eventually fall in to place and this will be worth it. But as far as bucks being DNA’d, I’m all for it and think it will help keep people honest, cut down on some of the bucks out there that really should be wethers, and help the dairy breeds as a whole. And if it turns out not to be an exercise in chaos and futility, I might even do my does too since I have a small herd.

As much as it's a relief knowing they pushed back the deadline they could have at least sent out a mass Email letting members know. I don't check their news feed regularly because 99% of the time there is nothing new!

They had something good going before they switched it all up and went digital. I've only been a member for a little while and this is all I've ever known. I had papers stuck in limbo as well 2 years ago and ended up calling to see where they were, the lady I talked to said she would figure it out and manged to get them out to me in a few short weeks. Now we don't have that option! They can just ignore us now.

I totally agree! Especially with Nigerians, the buck market especially is really flooded. Way too many bucks out there that really should've gotten a green cheerio.

For real. I’m fine with the DNA since yeah, so many bucks shouldn’t be intact (that’s why the registration fee is more) and it’s only a one time $32 per buck so it’s not a big deal.

I do nigies and they’re seen as this hot, new, exotic thing and if you happen to have a unicorn (polled, blue eyed, and moonspotted) buck…

I really feel for you, and the hundreds of other members like you stuck in the same boat. You did join at a bad time, and the association really did used to be great. I have been a member since 2015 so I remember when everything was running smoothly. If I had joined during the chaos and that's all I knew, I don't know that I'd have any faith in the organization. I applaud you guys for trying to stick it out. The association has made big steps in the right direction since the new EC was elected, so that gives me hope. I really do think we will see ADGA come out of this, but unfortunately I can't say that I expect it to be anytime soon. For those of you who do Facebook, following the Executive Committee's Facebook page and/or getting in touch with your directors through Facebook is a good start, they have been able to clarify some things.
For what it's worth, the performance programs manager is really good about getting things done. My DNA has been getting back to me in about 4 weeks.
