Do your goats ever milk themselves?

I have one gal that milks herself! Her name is Rita, and if I put her on the stanchion and then get distracted for a moment, instead of baa-aa-ing and stamping, or just tucking in to eat the grain I gave her, she starts spraying milk everywhere! It doesn't matter if I feed her or not. Usually if I feed her she doesn't actually start eating until I sit down to milk. This morning my mom called right after I plunked Rita's grain down in front of her. I was only on the phone for about 5 minutes, but when I turned around the stanchion and floor were flooded with milk that was streaming--not dripping--streaming out of each teat. I set a bucket underneath her while I mopped up the puddles and she continued to stream while I cleaned. I wished I'd noticed sooner! I could have just stayed on the phone and let Rita fill the bucket all by herself!

Oh my gosh! I guess it was like Pavlov and the dogs, her “bell” is standing on the milk stand. Amazing! Did you wash her and then it happened? Next time, just put the bucket there and phone your mom.

Was she tight? Some of my heavy milkers will stream first thing in the morning when they are so full...I get to milking quick to offer relief. If she is streaming even when pressure is off then I would suspect weak teat muscle ( I know there is a name for it lol..just can't think of it right off)
This can be a pain as means her teats don't close off and bacteria can be a problem leading to mastitis.

It was before I even washed her udder. I just had her up there, gave her the grain, and then the phone rang. This is not the first time this has happened with this doe.

Yeah, I've seen that with really tight udders too. But the problem is, this gal does it even when she's not tight! Her udder easily holds 2 quarts without leaking (and she doesn't usually leak because normally we have a routine). Lately she's been giving around 1 3/4 quarts--so about a cup less than capacity, and she was throwing milk all over the place! I've seen her leak when her udder was almost half empty if she gets worked up. It's like those teat muscles just relax and she can't hold it in--like incontinent except it's her udder and not her bladder!

Hopefully she's not prone to mastitis. She's had a very easy, low maintenance udder so far and is easy to milk, was a good mom who nursed her kids equally on both sides. She even looks like she'll dry up easily if I stop milking her, which I know can be a problem with leaky does. Hopefully she'll stay low maintenance and this will just be one of her little quirks (heaven knows she needs one because otherwise she's a very non-descript goat in both looks and personality).

I had a bit of this happen when I trained someone to milk. The person did some bumping before having the bucket ready and it started dripping (but not running out like yours). It must be they let down when the right stimuli are present. Kind of like when you come in the door at home and suddenly REALLY have to pee, and some people can't hold it.
I hope she is ok.

I really think she's fine. It's just her little weirdness. :)
