Doe Delivers Five Kids - one tiny struggling

371 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  GoofyGoat
My doe, Katie kidded five live babies March 28 (two days ago). First born was tiny, less than a pond, and so weak he couldn’t hold up his head. I thought we were going to lose him. Brought him in, bundled him up, syringe fed mom’s colostrum. In a couple of hours, he could raise his head and was trying to stand. Standing didn’t happen until 12 hours or so, but he is a little fighter and was progressing until this afternoon. I have been feeding colostrum replacer because I was afraid mom would not have enough for the other four. Started to slowly switch him over to cows milk today. I fear I have over fed him because he is now not wanting to eat. His little belly seems a little bloated too.

This is my first experience with bottle feeding. I need some quick advice on how I can relieve his bloat, if it is bloat, and how much he should actually be eating. Also, how often.

I read that he should be eating 10% to 12% of his body weight. Today he weighed in at 1.5 lbs, up 0.2 lbs from yesterday.

Congratulations on the five New babies🥰
Are you heating the milk to 101*F and making sure his temp is within normal limits?(101.5-103.5*) and
putting a pinch of baking soda in the first bottle of the day and probios in the last?
Heres a handy chart to help you with your bottle feeding.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I have been heating the milk, but not checking his temp. He has been active, although weak and behind the curve, nothing in his behavior, until now, was cause for concern. I’ll check his temp and start the pinch of baking soda at first feeding, and probiotics at last.

If he's been over fed..give his tummy rest by stopping milk for 1 to 2 feedings...feed electrolytes in place of milk. You can give a little Milk of magnesia 1/4 cc per pound to help rid toxins from his tummy. Once he's no longer bloated start milk back per the chart provided. Congratulations on the babies

Best wishes

You’re quite welcome. A baby can’t digest the milk if he’s too cold.

Thank you! This article helped also!

I am happy to report this morning that “Newt’s” belly has gone down and he is getting back to his normal little self! What would I do without this forum?!?!

Much better! His belly has gone down and he seems to be returning to his little self 🥰
I gave him baking soda and water twice instead of milk, according to article on Floppy Kid. He wanted to eat this morning so I gave him 1/4 to 1/2 oz. I added the pinch of baking soda as recommended and will add a pinch of probiotic tonight.
This forum has saved many, many little lives!!
