Doe not eating much, losing weight

962 Views 16 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
Hi all,

I have a Nigerian doe, that has been dropping weight, and now in the past few days, not eating much of her grain. Picking at her alfalfa and pasture grass.

Eyelids/gums are very pale pink. Temp is 104. No diarrhea. I feed the cocci medicated pellets. Shots and wormed last fall for all adults.

She did gobble down some oatmeal cookies while ago. I've only given toltrazuril to the babies. Should I start her on it?

Ideas?

104 is slightly elevated..I would keep watch on that. Pale lids and dropping weight all can be heavy parasite loads. If you can get a fecal done would be ideal..if not a good broad dewormer is needed. Ivomec, valbazen, Cydectin sheep drench are a few ideas..there is also horse pastes as well. Let us know what you have or can get and we can get you dose.
May need anemia treatment as well.

Sorry, I should have said the temp is 100.4, not 104. I have Ivermectin paste on hand, I can dose her tomor. I'll have to get a new weight on her. Still 3x her weight?
We have 16 goats in 3 separate large pens. No one else is showing this.
Just gave her Moxidectin. We'll see how she looks tomor. Should she have a second dose in a few days?
What do you mean by coccidia pellets? I don't know of any coccidia pellet medication. Also 100.4 is low. Rumen may be shutting down. I'd give B Complex and probiotics to start. May need some flat dark beer.
Which form of moxidectin was it?

Quest paste. I will have to go to Tractor Supply for probiotics in the morning. I gave her the B complex yesterday by mouth.
Flat beer??? Is there something else to use there? We don't drink.
The grain/pellets we feed has a cocci preventative in it.
Quest paste isn't boostered for 28 days. It's slow release.

Okay, would it be bad to give her Ivermectin on top of the moxidectin tomor?

Also, I have brewers yeast on hand. We live in a dry county, and tomor. is Sunday. Don't know that I'll be able to find any dark beer.

How often should I be giving the B complex? I syringed it down her throat earlier, hoping not to stress her out any more. Should I give her the injection instead?
Yes it would be bad. Ivermectin is the same class of drug. You don't want to overdose her.

Vitamin B is always injection unless it's a new kid with no rumen yet.

Okay, what other type wormer? And how often to give the B?
No more worming medications now. Red Cell to combat the anemia.

She dived into her hay this morning. I'm still doing everything discussed. Thanks.

I agree with goathiker. Give time for the dewormer to work. Do a fecal in 10 days to see where her parasite load is. If she's still high, choose something like Valbazen as a booster.
Anemia support:
Red cell 6 cc per 100 pounds daily for a week, then once a week until she pinks up.
B 12 or b complex..daily injected sub q. 1 cc per 25 pounds
30 cc of a 50/50 mix of acv and water once daily helps speed recovery
Daily probiotics at least 3 hours after any chemical treatment
Good quality loose minerals
High protien feed and plenty of hay,of browse food and some alfalfa all help rebuild red blood cells.

Good to hear she's diving into her hay today. Keep tabs on her temp.

Best wishes
