Doening foaming from mouth and swollen face

1133 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
I was doing chores yesterday morning when I noticed one of my dwellings had a swollen face, I tossed her in a spectate pen for a few hours to see if maybe she had just popped her jaw out, however when I got back she has built up quite a bit of foam around her mouth/nose, I gave her a unit of metacom (anti-inflammatory) it seemed to take down the swelling successfully, however the foam in/around her mouth is still there? She hasn't gotten into any strange feed, and has been on hay for the past month? Any idea what might have caused this? First picture was yesterday morning and the second is this morning, she is up to date on all vaccines and deworming.

Does she seem in distress? Foaming can be from choke, over production of barcarbonate, or eating lush green graze like clover. I would first Check her for blockage. Make sure nothing stuck in her throat. Give baking soda if no blockage. Does she seem bloated?
Swollen face can be allergic reaction to bee sting could be bottle jaw due to anemia. How does the swelling feel? Soft and squishy, hard, water filled?
Check her famacha and get her temp.

We have been in quite the drought this year so they haven't had anything green for a long time, her rumen doesn't seen to be distended, the swelling is soft almost like a bruise, however, it doesn't seem to hurt her to the touch of it! She is still eating and drinking normally. her eyes are still pink not as much as my other goats but not completely flushed of colour, and has a normal temperature of 103?

Could she have been stung? We've had that happen to a couple of ours. We gave Benadryl and it went down.

I agree to try Benadryl since everything else looks good. But if swelling is directly under her chin...maybe bottle jaw. Have a fecal done asap.

Have you done a fecal recently? That looks like bottle jaw to me

I haven't done fecal recently, it has frozen here already and there isn't much bugs left that would sting 🥶 She was born in January? I have never dealt with bottle jaw before what is the best way of going about that?
A fecal will help establish if she has it. It is caused by worms.
Maybe a more advanced goatherder can help? @happybleats
Check her famacha today and score it based on this chart below. If shes pale, then good chance it's bottle jaw. If you can post a picture of her side view so we can see better..might help.
To address bottle jaw, we treat anemia as bottle jaw is a reaction to anemia.
If you can't have a fecal done today use a broad based dewormer, like ivomec or cydectin sheep drench.
For anemia:
*Iron supplement like red cell, once daily for a week then once a week until famacha improves
*B 12 injectable once a day while anemic or b complex If you can't get b 12
*30 cc of 50/50 acv/water once a day to speed recovery
* Fresh raw garlic to boost immune system
*high protien feeds, browse food, alfalfa ect to help rebuild red blood cells.

If it came up over night could be a spider bite.
Do all as suggested.
