Does this require a reburn?

This was my husband and I’s first year disbudding. We went to a breeder and she showed us how. This is the only one that is seeming to not turn out. One side is a big bump and the other side is still taller than the other babies. I would love to not have to reburn him. Just not sure if this is a horn bud or?

Yes , both sides need redone. Make sure you get a solid copper ring around the entire horn bud.

Okay. We were sure to do that the first time so I’m not sure what went wrong 🥴 he is a bit skittish of us, so he’s really gonna hate us after that😑

This was our first time, too, but thankfully all went well. This is what it should look like. We did two rings on our boys, but you don't have to.

Thank you. I see most people doing the double ring but the lady who showed us said that she doesn’t do it. How can I do a double ring now that there is such a bump there? Or should I just burn around the outside again? It’s strange that it’s not growing scurs, just an entire horn haha

Now that, I do not know. 🤷‍♀️

Probably won’t be able to at this point. Since they seem to be normal horns growing, I am wondering if I should leave them and let them grow. I personally would rather horns than ugly scurs and it seems I am going to risk having scurs with this one if I reburn. (And 80% of people who bought my kids this year actually wanted them with horns.)
Any thoughts on that? I’m not sure if I let them grow that they won’t be wonky though

We don't like horns because we also have polled goats, plus we don't want them goring each other on accident or getting stuck in the fence. It's up to each individual what they are willing to risk. I don't know if they would be wonky in the end, but it looks like one's bigger than the other, so for now it would be. 🤷‍♀️
One of my boys last year needed to be redone twice, and he’s now smooth. It’s worth redoing in my opinion, ugly scurs can grow in wierd ways that can be bad for the goat, like towards the skull.
When you reburn, make sure you go all the way around that horn, even if the iron can’t be centered over, just work around it. And make sure your iron is good and hot! My issue was not letting the iron heat up between kids/sides.
and you can always regain trust with food ;) my three burn boy loves me still:)
Good luck!

Thanks so much! What about this little gal? It was bleeding when the scab came off so I sprayed it. But it is looking raised and bumpy, and the other side looks like it could be under the scab 🥴

Yes - she will need done as well on both sides. If you don’t Re burn them , most likely you will have scurs.

Oops! Ibuprofen, not Benadryl. For a potential swelling and pain :) I keep a bottle of the children’s liquid in my disbudding kit.
Thanks guys! One last thing, should I pull the scab off the other side of the doe before reburning?
I say one last thing but I’ll probably have more questions 😂

I assuming that you know it’s successful if the scabs are flat and sunken in? I realize some are like that and some are bubbling up and coming off sooner than others, maybe because the growth underneath is pushing them up?

Yes, pop it off and burn underneath. Any bleeding will be cauterized and you will be able to see better what you need to do. Just hold on tight, the older they get the stronger they get… And have treats ready for when you’re done :)

Never use ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Advil or Tylenol) for goats aspirin only. They are toxic for animals. Banamine is good for disbudding. Give 1cc per 100lbs a half hour before you reburn.

Fiasco Farm hasn't owned goats in probably at least 15 years. While some info may be timeless, other info isn't.

Ok, there are lots of other sources including some scientific articles and some from right here on tgs that claim it’s safe, and if it’s a one time dose for disbudding and not being used for long term pain management I think it’s safe.
some people can’t afford a vet for a script of banamine.
1cc per 10# is what I use, childrens liquid ibuprofen.
Have never had any complications.
