Dog Ate Copper Bolus

1637 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  toth boer goats
I was copper bolusing my goats today ( I empty the capsules into bread and roll them into a ball ) and my dog unknown to me was with me. I done all the girls ( I had enough left for my young buck )set the bowl down which was holding the bread balls and when I went to lift it again it was empty! She ate 4 grams worth, she is half jack Russell half chiwawa and weighs around 6kg.

I have dolamite and sulfur on hand?

Thankfully she never got near the bowl before I done the girls our it could be a lot worse.

You need to contact your vet. They’ll know the best route to take.

Yes I will give them a ring in the morning when they open again but in the mean time if anyone knows anything that can help expel or slow down the bolus please let me know.

I wouldn't wait until morning to call the vet. Those rods may cause serious gut infections when
they get embedded in the intestinal walls.

It would probably be best to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide.

Update, the dog was sick on her own this afternoon and a lot of the copper rods came up with it.

I will have a bottle of peroxide on hand incase anything like this happens again

Thanks all

Dogs are like goats, they try and eat anything, except for what you want them to eat! Glad he threw up!

Glad she seems to be doing good. I too have a half Jack Russell terrier who loves to follow me in the goat pen and tries to snatch the goat treats that I have the copper bolus hidden in. I had never really worried that much about what might happen if he did get one. Now I know to be extra careful to make sure he doesn't get one. Thank you for sharing this experience! Learned something new today!
