    we have 3 mallards
    a drake and 2 hens
when we got them i planned on putting them in with the chickens whose coop is not covered
so i clipped the ducks flight feathers
    no worries
well, things change and the chickens went free range for the summer so we put the ducks in a larger covered pen so they couldn't fly away
we were going to put them (and chickens) back in the coop before school and to get them ready for winter
well, feathers grew back on the ducks so i started to trim them back before they went in with the chickens
the first, and smallest, hen i did
THANK GOD i only got the first 2 feathers
bled like a stuck hog and i was scared to death that she was gonna bleed to death
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the bleeding finally did stop but i need to know
    WHAT DID I DO WRONG?!?!?!?!?!?!
ive never seen them bleed before
    !!!!!!!!!
i cried i was so scared
    please help
(the purple color on her wing is BlueKote - i was desparate and it's what i use on the goats)

its really hard for me to tell in the pics , but it looks like you cut way too high up on her feathers.

in the 2nd pic you can see the tip of my thumb
the feathers that are just below that...
those are the last ones i cut off
    then
    below those feathers
are those shafts with feathers growing out the ends
i thought those shafts were just "empty" shafts protecting the feathers until they matured more
so, yea, i cut into the shaft
    :tears: :tears: :tears: :tears:
    is she gonna be ok?
why did those shafts grow out like that?
    they didn't on the drake
(i didn't look at the other hen)

Sounds like the quills with the tufts growing out the ends are the "adult" feathers...these are young birds right? The feathers that grow in after they lose their baby down are the "in between" feathers I think they usually grow a second round of flight feathers as their permanent ones...I could be wrong though. I'm sure she'll be fine as long as you got the bleeding stopped.
