My boer/savanna buckling, Ivan, has a little ear tag in his ear. I'd rather he not have it- he's already gotten in caught in fencing and the other goats try to rip it out. Its a small ear tag and hasn't torn his ear yet- but I'd like to remove it before it causes any damage.
I don't have an ear tagger or an ear tag remover.

So the question is- What can I do to remove it?

    Thanks a ton!

If you have a side cutters you can use that, or have somebody hold him and use a really sharp scissors.

Um... please pardon my stupidity but- what tha heck is a side cutter???
Would pruning shears/ hoof trimmer thingy work?

I did notice the tag has a metal piece in it that goes through his ear... I would imagine that, that part would have to be cut through.

I guess you could call it a wire cutters, it looks like a pliers, and looks kind of like a small pruning shears.

You could try the hoof trimmers, or pruning shears, whichever is sharper.

We sut our boers off with just regular wire cutters. The metal pieces really are not that thick or strong.

What is the tag for? Is it a Scrapies tag? If so save it so you have the number. That is very important to hold on to. Some have plastic pieces that are in the middle of the ear and others are metal. I have used my hoof clippers to get them out because I have to re tag them but mine are plastic.

The breeder just tagged him so she could tell her goats apart. Not for scrapie.
I'm going to try to get it out this afternoon. Hopefully he doesn't wiggle around while I'm snipping by his ear!

On a couple pygmys I bought from the auction a long long long time ago used new pruning shears. Took some work but I got the tags off. They were scrapie tags so I wrote down which tag belonged to which goat.

My goats do not wear tags here. Seen them get ripped out before and just wont take a chance. Every pygmy I sell I send the scrapie tag with them. If the person wants the goat tagged I'll tag them right before the person puts them in the vehicle.
