Eating chives?

693 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  DDFN
I’ve read onions are bad for goats. We have wild chives all over the yard and they’re impossible to eradicate. Our new three month old doelings have been eating our grass and the chives and leaves (instead of the alfalfa we have set out lol). Is this ok?

I have only ever heard that onions will effect the taste of the milk. I hope someone with some more experience chimes in. I'm curious too!

If that’s the case I’m fine with that ahha. I do hope someone can shed some light. Google was not helpful. And im confused since they belong to the onion family.
Here is a link to a site that lists poisonous plants for goats. Chives are not on it. Neither are onions.

That’s great thank you. Didn’t realize clovers were toxic to them.

They aren’t normally. Just in large quantities when they haven’t had access to them before, I think.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

The only thing I've ever seen with excess clover is that it can make them look like they are foaming at the mouth. I've never actually seen it cause illness or death.

Chives have been fine and I never had milk taste any different. We had tons at the old farm and they loved them.

Never had an issue with clover either but one thing I learned with the horses and not sure if it could happen in some goats. When you don't see a horse drooling from clovers is a bad thing because they don't process it like other horses and their kidneys can bit process it. In those cases you have to force salt intake to jump restart the kidneys . Had this happen with one of my uncle's Colts and had it almost starr with my mini stallion once when the hubby gave him a big pad of clover hay. Only seen it in male horses before and never in mares or my goats. So maybe some goats can have the same reaction as some of the horses?
