What type of animal is the fence rated for? I think that sheep and goats are the smallest sort of livestock that would be kept within an electric fence, so I'm guessing the charger would be fine to contain goats. The other question is, what sort of creature do you need to keep out? Dogs/coyotes/wolves, cougars, bears? I chose my charger and strung my fence according to what I needed to keep out.

Ours are out in pasture next to cattle. They do a great job alarming each other. We have a 4 strand high tension fence for the adults, and anywhere kids are allowed we run 5-6 strand, or put them in a group hutch. Ours mind the fence, it's more a psychological barrier than anything. They can walk thru if they wish, but they don't.

I have a fencer that isn't that strong and they stay far away from it once they have hit it once. A lot depends on the goats, some do well with e fencing and others go right through it.
