I'm wondering, can I leave electrolytes out for my goats all the time? I had them out because I had a buckling that was scouring, and because of that I found that all of them really like the "special water". I've been trying to get some weight on my does and I read that water consumption is important. I thought it may be nice for them to have the added vitamins in addition to encouraging them to drink more. My concern is the sugar content, is that a problem? I will of course always have fresh clean water available too.
I leave electrolytes out on days higher than 80 degrees but haven't done it constantly. Maybe just put it out for a couple days than a couple days only plain water. I'm not sure you really want them having electrolytes all the time.
Just to be clear because I'm not sure that I am, I am asking about offering it when it isn't needed.
I figured that this could be a potential, "too much of a good thing" situation. I'll maybe offer it every couple days, just to since I have it and I should use the packet up before it goes bad. Maybe it will help, maybe it wont.
I put a bucket out when it hits 85*also, especially in the spring as the goats are getting used to the Texas heat. I use Farnam Apple Elite. (For horses) Our weather flips more than flapjacks on Sunday buffet line so some of my goats have trouble adjusting. I keep it cold and fresh. Once they’re more acclimated I put it out on all days over 100*.
Ive never had any issues or negative effects unless you count complaining by Luna who always has to have the first sip and I take it into the pen without calling her .... she’s an apple-aholic though so 🤫
It would probably be like if we only dank Gatorade all the time....short term benefits, long term likely not best. I'd offer it on hot days or when you have a sick one like you said.
