Eye discharge... goats are hard

You've all been so helpful, and I have another question. This morning 3 of my 5 goats (3-4 months of age, Myotonic breed) had some eye discharge. Should I just watch for now, or is there something I should do? It was hard to get a pic but you can kinda see it in the floppy eared guy here.

One of the 3 affected has recently been on antibiotics (after an operation) and it seems if it was bacterial he would have been somewhat protected being on meds? Also their shots/deworming is up to date.

They are shut up in a barn overnight and we use the deep litter method with straw. They get a bit of grass hay in the barn but otherwise are just on pasture per the vet's recommendation (though I don't know if they are eating enough).

Any advice is appreciated!

I use Terramycin ointment, anytime I see eye discharge. Pinkeye is very contagious, so I would put some in every eye. If its not pinkeye, it will not hurt the eyes at all.

Okay hmm, so after much research over the Winter as my human kids passed pink eye around, I learned that (human) pink eye will usually resolve on its own after a couple of weeks. Is this not true in livestock?

I just saw the Terramycin ointment on Amazon - will the Vetericyn spray be just as effective? If so that seems easier to apply, but if ointment is better I'll get that and just catch them (they're still pretty timid).

Also, thank you for being so helpful!! Can I ask you if they look skinny at all to you in the photos? Vet said "put them back on grain only if they start looking skinny" - not sure how to tell if they look skinny, but they definitely don't look overweight to me. Man, poultry is so much easier - I thought the learning curve would be just as easy with goats as with chickens...

No … use the ointment 2-3 x a day. Wear gloves… it is zoonotic - can be transmitted to humans if it is pinkeye. Without treatment you risk blindness.

As far as weight .. put your hands on them . Is they a nice cover if fat over the ribs, or do they feel bony. If the latter , start on a small amount of grain. They look pretty good in the pics, but it’s best to feel your goat - winter hair…

Oof, okay. Thank you.

And also thanks for the weight response.. they feel okay to me, not particularly bony, not chunky. I'll just watch them.

You could always use the Vetricin and see if that clears it up. Order the Terramycin because it is good to have on hand. Use the Vetricin until you get the Terramycin.

I use neosprin without the pain relief ingredient successfully if no tetracycline is on hand.

I'll get both then, thanks!

It seems much easier than ointment; I'll just go ahead and get both.
