Fecal or Blood work

196 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Lorena
My heard started with a lice problem I want to say last month. I thought I caught it early so I just powered up the one that started it. I did make sure and checked the other goats to see if they had any lice but I didnt see anything. A few days later i noticed one of them started to get bald spots and I just powered everyone. I checked them every other day to see if they still had them and they looked clean. Days went by and one of them started to have very bad hair. I checked her for lice and she looks clean. I read somewhere that lice can be under the skin and wasn't able to see with the naked eye. So my question is should I do a fecal or blood work or both?

You can see lice..you can't see mites. But mites leave behind a telltale sign they are there..crusty dry angry looking bald patches of skin.
Fecal is always good idea to make sure I ternary parasites are not a problem. Often a weekend immune system welcomes all kinds of problems.
Is the area of hair loss soft? Not crusty? I see copper may be needed...1 gram per 22# .
Zinc may help..50 mg once a day for 5 days then assess
The one looks a bit bloated.
What are their diets? Any loose minerals?

Her bald spots are kinda soft. And I had her eating alfalfa and grain while I trimmed her hooves and was waiting for her to drop some pellets so I can take to the vet for the fecal test. She took like 30 minutes. So I think she might have gotten a bit bloated for all the food. And yes I give them loose horse minerals.
