First fresheners

396 Views 19 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Boer Mama
We bought 2 first freshners they'd be due anytime now till end of June I don't have dates.

However they really don't look bred.

My questions are do your first freshers show as much as your second or third kidder? Or udder delovement happen at all? or is it last minute? Can i see pictures of your prego first freshners?

We can’t tell by body pics. We need a rear pic of lady parts, tail up in order to help. Nutrition, body type and genetics play a huge part into how your doe carries her kids. . Udders are dependent upon genetics as to fill. You should see some differences in udder development even if the udder is not full.
Just going by body condition a month out I would hope to see more - guessing I would say no unless nutrition suffered and they were not getting what they needed. You can get a blood test to know for sure.

Il head out and get better pictures here soon.

For nutrition wise these guys are on grass and in brush get moved every 3 days.
We were told these 2 are only yearlings. Blood test out here aren't an option My vet is useless when it comes to the goats sadly.

Since you aren't sure of due dates, being due at end of June means it isn't crazy that you don't see udder development yet. I feel like a month out for a FF is usually when you see the most noticeable first changes. By now, I'd hope to see udder development, but since due dates are up in the air maybe that and genetics as goatblessings said could be playing a role. We can't judge based on stomach size, as they can carry super big or super small despite the number of kids. In certain pics they look quite thin, poor coat conditions, missing some hair... so I would be concerned about nutrition and overall health. Or, they could not be bred - it's very hard to say without exact due dates and blood tests! I'm really more concerned that they don't appear to be thriving physically.

What would you suggest to be a concern on overall health? Fecals are clean and everyone is up to date on vaccines. They are on lush green grass and also bush clean out. They get moved every 3 days. They also gave ulimated access to goat mineral.

Here’s a FF yearling boer due June 25th. Picture is a cpl weeks old, I’ll try and get you a new one this evening.

Your goats look happy to have all that graze and browse! Maybe the new additions just haven’t had a chance to get caught up on nutrition yet.
If they are about a month out, you could give them some selenium and copper bolus in addition to their loose minerals.

Thank you. I'm trying my best to give them the best they deserve. They are definitely learning curves. And she definitely dosent have much of and udder either. I'm assuming it's mostly a first freshner thing?

All goats are different. My very first 3 mamas walked around with huge udders prior to kidding! But it seems like everyone’s calmed down a bit since then…
I also had a FF not build any udder at all and kid out twin bucklings. I had to supplement those poor boys… you could see them look hungrily at the other mamas walking by with big udders 😅
She has fed triplets as a 2F and twins as 3F, and probably would have handled triplets this year but I pulled one to graft to another mama.
So, even if your FF doesn’t have much udder this year, she could do better subsequently.

It wouldn't even bother me If they weren't bred this year to be honest either since there only yearlings. But I'm also not sure on what age it is okay to breed goats either. I feel that another year without any babies from yearlings are okay with me too. Lol.

Would some pics of an FF Nigie be helpful? I know their a lot smaller than Nubians, LaManchas, Boer, etc., but I've got an FF right now who's due sometime in July.
Ok, I remembered to grab pics for you this time! Here’s my boer yearling FF due June 25th-
Pics tonight, a cpl weeks after those earlier ones:

these were taken tonight, so she had a full rumen from her daytime foraging.

Shes got a nice start on her udder, but nothing too noticeable going on with her vulva yet. I’m going to venture a guess of twins, possibly trips for her. So a FF carrying a single would look quite a bit smaller…
And I did just give her a copper bolus on May 14, so it’s been ~10 days.

I definitely think mine are open which I'm totally okay with

That will give you time to get them additional minerals and let them grow… then maybe know a due date on them when you do breed! 😁

So, she could be starting her last month now, which makes sense with just starting her little udder. Just gotta wait and see 😅
