First tragedy

This morning at the 8:30 feed up, as I was going up to feed sheds I noticed Meadows hovering over a baby. Meadows, aka Granny”, is about 8 + years old and the oldest goat I have. Now back to the baby. She had 2 but one was dead and the other almost. She (the baby) was very week, so I help mom dry her off as it was 36 degrees. She could not stand and legs are very weak. I gathered her up with some towels and did the finger in mouth trick and found a cold tongue. I headed to the Corel and got a five gallon dark bucket and put her in some hay to lay on in the bucket and placed it in the sunshine. Made a hay barrier to protect from wind. She made it thru today so far but still weak but trying to move around. Now back to finding her this morning, I gave her a dab of selium and a little vets RX. About 11:00am mama still wouldn’t let her suck, so I took my drench him apart and milked about 20ml of colostrum and fed it to her. She ate most of it so i left her in the sun, in the bucket and had to go out of town for a while. When got back late this evening and went back to feed the herd and she was still alive and trying to pull around a little. I tried to milk mama but didn’t get but about 15 ml in my drench gun so she ate that up, I just kinda stuck my finger in her mouth and she would suck on it so I slipped the drench needle in and very slowly drench the milk so she wouldn’t strangle. Mom is doing good it appears, so I gave her 6 ml of B Complex first thing this morning after I found her with the baby. Don’t know what the night will bring but she is under a shed with mom and out of the wind where it’s warm and dry. Maybe tomorrow she will stand. I thought mom was in good shape and ready to birth. Fool me.

Sorry things aren't going well. Can you just bottle feed her?

So sorry. We all have these hard times occasionally. Doesn't mean we are bad goat owners, we just can't control everything. Sounds like you are doing the best you can. Hope the little one is better in the morning. If there is any way to put a heat lamp on them through the night, that would help.

11:00pm - just came in from trying to feed the baby. Mom has a big bag but not a lot of milk. I got about 10-12 ml and gave to baby. She didn’t suck like she did this evening.
You need to tube baby and baby needs to be really warm. She also needs to start moving around a bit more. Sorry you lost 1 and Ibreally pray this little one pulls through.

The kid is not going to get up and move if she does not have calories in her. She is also not going to be able to keep her body temp up either. Get colostrum replacer and give to her after you get her warm enouh. Or put mom in the stanchion a d let the kid try to nurse while mom is confined. May e mom is just not letting down for you. Warm compresses and massage that udder.

She sucked a little this morning. Twice I put her on a tit and she sucked for 3-4 minutes the first time and about 3 minutes the second time. It is pretty and sunshine today and she is in the sun. Still can’t stand on her on yet but when I towel walk her then squat down on my knees and kinda brace her she will stand for a little while. See pic attached. I did give her a drop of VetRx in each nostril.

Cute. That isn't good that mom has a full udder and you can't get anything out. She may be congested.

Mom Needs some work on her udder. Bring out very warm water and a rag..some udder balm.
Do warm compresses, massage, knead, milk, repeat. Got to get things moving. Baby needs more to have energy to even try to get up. She's a fighter to make it this far. Is baby pooping OK?
Give baby 1/4 cc BoSe and a vit e gel cap and a cod liver gel cap. Just poke a hole and squeeze in her mouth. This should help get her legs under her. When you're out there stand her often with support. If she falls lift her up again. Need to build those leg muscles. Between her moms needs and hers, will be quite a run.

Is the does udder hard? Hot to the touch? Has she been tested for CAE?
I would keep putting baby under mom to eat, when she is latched on go on the other side and see if you can get more milk out of her. She should let her milk down for the her baby. If you are not able to get a lot of milk out your really going to have to step in and try to help her out.
Since if she is eating from mom and your not able to measure how much she is getting, keep a eye on her stomach. You want her to be nice and flat on the sides when she is done eating. If she is not then your going to have to supplement her. Hopefully you get enough milk from the other side to do this but if not go with colostrum replacer for now.
With her not getting much to eat yesterday I would probably go out there every few hours to try and get her to eat. As mentioned if she doesn’t get those calories she is not going to improve.

I agree with the others.
Do you have any nutri-drench to give her? That would give her some vitamins and good energy.

That kid needs some colostrum replacer now. And feed it just enough milk to make it know hungry.

She passed away today. I was with her at 11:00pm last night and at 8:30 this morning. I thought she was getting stronger as she stood just for a few seconds ( about 30) . At dinner she wouldn’t open her eyes or eat. Mid evening she was dead.

Oh I'm so sorry, I know that feeling. 😢 But you did what you could and shouldn't blame yourself! That's all we can do is try!
