We are currently giving our goats a mix of Poulin NCA Sweet 16 no copper added (2/3) and of Green Mountain Organic Whole Grain Mix (1/3; Corn, Barley, Soybeans). We mix both feed to give them some more natural organic food.

We are also giving them free choice Golden Blend goat minerals. Green Mountain is stopping their whole grain mix and recommended that I replace it by their Dairy Pellet 16% which is fully supplemented.

    So I have 2 questions:

    1. Do you agree that I should replace the Whole Grain Mix by the 16% Dairy Pellet? Or do you recommend something else.

    2. If I do replace the WHole Grain Mix by the Diry Pellet 16%, should I stop giving them the free choice Golden Blend goat minerals since both food (Poulin RCA sweet 16 and Green Montain Dairy Pellet 16%) are fully supplemented?

    Thank you for your help.

    Lionel

What you are going to do is slowly transition over to the new stuff.
Begin by adding 1/4 cup of the new stuff & taking out the same 1/4 of the old.
After a few days increase the new by another 1/4 cup. It will take a few weeks.
With any feed change it needs to be done slowly.;)

Thanks Nancy. What are your thoughts about the supplements?

Well, corn & soybeans as far as I know is not an ideal feed for goats.
You can just get dry cob (corn oats & barley) but I have no idea of the protein content, & they should have at least 14%.
The Dairy pellets sound fine though.
The GoldenBlend minerals doesnt list the copper amount:eek:
The loose minerals we give are about 2000ppm copper.

Nancy, this is very useful. The loose minerals say Copper Min 0.15% which is 1500 ppm.

You would still want to put out free choice minerals. They will eat it as needed. Sometimes a lot will be eaten and sometimes a little will be eaten. I wouldn't put out a lot. Just a little and then learn how to judge how much you need to put out.

Also, with the minerals, goats seem to like them fresh. I only put out small amounts at a time and change it out once or twice a week.
